First time on Squaw Creek

First time on Squaw Creek - 01/06/23 01:52 PM

Well got my first look at Squaw Creek yesterday. Caught 16 bass and they all looked like cookie cutters between 2 and 3 pounds with the biggest one just under 3. They did all look very fat and healthy! I was AMAZED at the crazy amount of tilapia beds on that lake! And there were tilapia fry EVERYWHERE about an inch long. Even out to 8 feet deep the beds were just about everywhere. Most of the bites came on a TR in 8 to 10 feet, with a few on a spinnerbait early. With it being a 2.5 hour drive, having to be off the lake at 3:30, a $30 entry fee, and the fishing good but not real good, it probably won't be on my list to go back. Did have a little adventure leaving. After wiping down the boat and getting ready to leave the park, there's a small hill you have to go back up to get out of the gate. With water on the road from other boats as they're leaving...here's a little advice if you're driving a two wheel drive...avoid the "wet spot"! That road is slicker than snot!! I had to back down the hill and get a second run at it where it was drier. LOL. That's a first for me! Other than that it was a beautiful day to be on the water.

Thanks for the report. thumb
We saw others having trouble getting up the hill last week too.
I just got a little faster start going up so not to slip around much with my 2WD.
Did you see much dead fish this week and what water temps did most of the fish come from.?

On the hill... There was a thread a little while back about whether a 4WD was necessary when toeing a boat...

Each time this is asked, that hill comes up!!! roflmao

Last Thursday someone couldn’t make it up the hill. As they were sliding backwards or trying to go back down the hill they jackknifed their trailer. There was no way to get around them and the line to get out backed up for 30 minutes.

It's an overrated experience...... I went 3 times this year and that's plenty. If I go back before it closes it will be to catfish

You’ve gotta make a run at the hill in a 2WD after it gets good and wet. Thanks for a realistic report… I noticed they had 60 reservations left for today and the weekends aren’t booking up till the week of. That should tell u everything u need to know about how it’s fishing for most. Jan full moon didn’t even get booked in advance.

Gotta call em like ya see em. Here's a pic I took of one of the last ones caught. I didn't take pics of the others earlier because I thought I'd get on a better fish at some point. This one was caught around 2:30 and I figured might as well have my bud take a quick shot since it didn't look like anything much bigger was coming. This one was 2.7. Funny, all of both of ours were almost the exact same size other than one little bitty dink I caught. My partner caught exactly the same number as me. Crazy day. Only saw one dead tilapia the whole day. The "hill" is ok just gotta stay off the wet spot if you're in a two wheel....Chevy, Ford, Volkswagon..don't matter. [Linked Image]

There's fish, I have caught more than a few out there over the years. Unless you are playing for proper money it's really not worth messing with. You catch the same cookie cutter fish with the hope of stumbling into a few 4 or 5 pound fish. Gets old after a while. I'm spending my time catching less fish but have chance at proper sized stuff. It's a good place to take a kid or an old person

If it was close I would fish it. Not crossing DFW to get there. The biggest deal is having to leave when someone says to leave.

It was fun pre 9-11

You pointing that "old person" finger at me because I'm old, or the old man white tennis?? LOL. Yeah, spent most of the day deeper than 8 foot and was surprised I didn't catch at least a 4 or 5. Graphed some 20' to 25' water and saw fish but they weren't "playing". Like you said, for the "proper money". For $30 bucks and a two and a half hour drive I'll go to Fork or Rayburn and take my chances on getting a little bigger bite.
