Ceramic coating on your rig

Ceramic coating on your rig - 12/25/22 08:13 PM

Who's done it? Pricing? Results? Thinking about doing both my boat and 2023 vette in the Austin area. Merry Christmas to me!

While not a true ceramic coating I did start using tve Chemical Guys Ceramic Hydrospeed Quick Detailer on tge boat. It's damn good. Clean well and repels water and dirt like nothing else I have used.

Re: Ceramic coating on your rig - 12/25/22 08:22 PM

Not remotely worth the price. I’ve had it done twice now on two different boats. I’ve owned about 15 boats, and notice no difference from a good polish job and the coating. If you wipe your boat down every time I’m convinced you wipe it off.
I wanted to add that the reason I paid twice is because someone told me the first time the applicator must not have known what he was doing. I wanted this to work to help keep my boat looking good so I paid again. Second time got the approved factory applicator for the brand I chose and used him. 2000.00 later same results. A nice polished boat but lasted about the same amount of time as a good wax job.
I think it is a very misleading product. Ceramic materials have to be fired to become actual ceramics, this is simply a high dollar wax job.

My experience is with it on black paint. As said above. It's not worth it. If you want to maintain it. Use wax.

wax... several times a year, allows me to touch every inch, when I come to fasteners bust out the tool and snug, and on around the boat...then onto the trailer checking welds for signs of stress, check break system for leaks, ect...its a complete visual inspection of the rig... it's time well spent !

Y’all clean your boats? My idea of cleaning my boat is digging old worms out of the auto bilge switch and putting 42 lures back in their 3700’s! woot

I’m with Steez on this one, life’s too short to clean a boat. Every once in awhile my ol lady will get tired of looking at it and somewhat clean it but that’s about it.

I have used the spray on ceramic nano stuff and it works great and does last a little longer than wax, 3 times a yr. it gets a full wipe down.

this is still the best by far imo, works at least as well but lasts a long time, I use it twice a yr. protec sealant polish. all their stuff is good.

I will use either on the 95 champion.

I use lucas slick mist for wipe down.

Do you do a traditional wax every so often as well, or just this?

Wonder if it will work on my 76 monark

Waxed once a year with marine wax. I use this like BBS/BTS, it's a quick detailer and cleaner.

if the gel is not already a little glossy then do a polishing compound with electric random orbit to bring up the shine, then wax/ceramic etc.

I do. I don't come from money nor did I get it for free. My boat represents a lot of hard work. I can't just run out and replace it if I destroy it. I take care of my stuff as best I can. I am proud of what I have. Granted I am not a boat wiper and I am not afraid to use it to get to where I want to go but I do my best to keep it somewhat clean and in good repair.
I don't think there is any extra street cred in having your boat look like it's been sitting.out back for 2 years though...

Re: Ceramic coating on your rig - 12/26/22 03:00 PM

I once knew a guy who bought a sun bleached bass boat. The gel coat had basically rotted away. You could feel the glitter texture.

He was the manager. Wanted it pretty. The boat was brown and it was an Ok Boss.

7 coats of automotive clear coat.

The boat went from looking like a huge POS. To a huge, shiny, POS. Not long after, the guy was fired for embezzling company money. Which wasn't about the $2000 worth of clear coat. Or the boat. He had carpet installed in his using company money.

No idea what happened to his boat.

I have to agree with you, I have had two boats done, the applicator was very good, I just do not see the advantage, now when I wipe my boat down it tends to smear, after wiping it down once i have to go back over it again to make it look good.

I’m on my 3rd boat cover for this boat. I take care of what counts. The mechanical stuff and gear. A 20 year old boat with 800 hours on the Yamaha, that looks like it’s MAYBE 2-3 years old, is proof you don’t need ceramic coatings to last a long time.

But, saying that, I have been known to obsess over a couple of my cars. cheers

No street cred here. My boat has been at the lake for 9 months and haven’t washed it. It gets used almost every weekend. Sits on a lift when not in use. Needless to say I need to figure out how to get the water spots out.
