Headed to Salto

Headed to Salto - 12/24/22 04:47 PM

My fishing buddy and I have been fortunate enough to fish the Mexican lakes twice a year for the last 10 years or so and we are heading to El Salto on Jan. 9th. If anyone has been there recently or are going in the next week or so and want to share any current lake/fishing information that might enhance our trip we'd appreciate it. As usual when we visit this time of year our intent is to throw A-rigs, glide baits, soft swimbaits and deep diving crankbaits. Thank you in advance and Merry Christmas.

Go to Ron Speed Outdoor Adventures and look at the fishing reports, which are what the folks fishing report as their daily catches. I’m headed to both El Salto and Picachos 2/6.

I've been checking the Salto lodge reports frequently but typically what I see are reports of guys throwing senkos, dragging lizards or throwing poppers in 10 feet of water or less. I'm not questioning whether those presentations work but we like to target larger fish instead of numbers. I did see one report of about a couple of guys throwing "swimbaits" in 20 feet of water. Last January the lake was fishing tough during January and we still managed to catch some quality fish up to 10.66 throwing large swimbaits, glide baits and A-rigs.I was hoping for some information regarding water levels relative to last year, water temperature and clarity. I'd like to hear from anyone who has been there recently who chose to target prespawn fish with baits not so typical. Obviously only a small sampling of lodge guests have their catch report published so we were hoping someone on TFF might have some different intel. I sincerely appreciate all the responses we've received to this point.

I am an agent for one of the lodges on the lake. One of the best ways to get more information is to contact the outfitter you booked with to get intel on lake levels, water temperature and clarity. They will have that information. As far as what baits I would wait 3-5 days out.

I fished Picachos 30 days ago and headed back with a group in late January. Have not fished El Salto this season, so I don't have any personal knowledge to help out.

Good Luck!

We were at El Salto the 10-15 of this month. We averaged 100 fish days with the majority of our fish coming on Zoom magnum lizards. We caught a handful of fish on a yellow Magic, but the top water bite wasn't very good. We did have a couple in our group that caught fish deep but most of our fish came shallow flipping. Hope this helps.
