Texas team wins High School National Championship - 07/11/22 03:58 PM

A team from Texas won the national Championship on Pickwick late. Team consisted of a boy (Wyatt Ford) and a girl a girl (Fallon Clepper) from Texas. They had like 39 pounds in total weight They won $250,000 in "potential scholarships" (not sure what that means). She is the first female to win a national H.S. title (according to the news article I read). banana

"potential scholarships" means that several schools offer scholarships at this event. The only way you get prize "money" is if you accept a scholarship from one of the schools. Otherwise, you get a trophy and a "thanks for attending". They also lump the money from all schools together to increase the image of a huge payout.
When we went, there were a few chances to win some swag during the week but not much. Lots of smoke at these events imo.

I will say that the town of Florence goes all out in trying to provide the anglers and the students a top-notch experience. Even knowing how the game is played, we would attend again if we got the chance - we had a great time overall.

So 3 major college championships and now the HS National title were all taken by Texas/THSBA teams or alumni this year........... no wonder the college scouts are flocking to the Texas HS events.

The kids that the scouts are coming to look at are usually at the point that they don't need the captain to put them on fish.

The young man I captained for his first three years of high school is now entering his sophomore year of college on a substantial scholarship for fishing. His dad took over the captain responsibilities his Senior year because honestly I had nothing left to teach him. I put 'em on fish plenty of times his freshman through junior years- but they didn't always catch 'em. The two wins he and his partner had were his senior year when he was solely responsible for finding the fish. The kid was/is obsessed with fishing and finding fish. He is on the water at least 15-20 days a month on average for some amount of time. Studies maps, watches content, DMs pros and talks with them at shows, practices everything that he does not see as a strength, etc, etc, etc. It's impressive. He has no dream of being a professional angler, but works every day to be the best angler he can be that day, and the next. Not normal, but just an example....and he's not alone.

Actually Fallon Clepper is a very accomplished angler in her own right and can certainly hold her own. Your comment is very distasteful and somewhat chauvinistic.

Frankie has a rep of uncouthness. He likes to think he is "shocking" folks.

I listened to the interview od her on the Michael Berry Radio program and she said she fishes 3-5 days a week, launches by herself, has her own boat. I think in the T she contributed the most fish to their combined sack but he had the better fish including the 7#+ lunker on the last day. She did well and would probably kick Frankie's butt on his own waters head to head!
