Whats Fishing like on Buchanan & LBJ

Spent the last week over in Hill Country with daughter getting married, and have to say it is pretty sweet out there. Since wife and I have been talking about relocating over the next year, she suggested Hill Country... but told her I need to be close to decent fishing. I've spent a lot of time over in Horseshoe Bay golfing, so I know the area is good for that.

Any feedback?

I know in the past LBJ has been very good fishing, it had a lot of grass and routinely 20+ taken to check in tournaments. I also know its got a lot of pleasure boaters. Hopefully someone who lives down there and has fished it more than a few times can weigh in, ive never been on Buch

I've been fishing LBJ for years, for fun and club tournaments. I'm no pro so my biggest bag from there on a Yellow Magic (b/c topwater is all I know) is 25 and change. Stay away from there on weekends, holidays, spring break, and summer. Otherwise go rip some lip.

I've been fishing LBJ for a while-10+ years. Bought a home there 4 years ago and about to retire there. IMO the lake has suffered quite a bit since the grass has disappeared. It still has some good fish in it and this year has actually been a little better for me, but it isn’t like it was 4-5 years ago. Still a lot of fun to fish and honestly the boat traffic is a little overhyped. Don’t kid yourself, there are TONS of big boats making ridiculous waves but for the most part that is on late spring/summer weekends and holidays and even then you can fish till about 9-10:00 and again the last hour or so before dark and never be bothered. Not great for the guy visiting that wants to fish all day but for a homeowner, I never have a problem fishing without boat traffic.

The Flood that happened 4 or so years ago washed away a lot of the grass. IMO it's an annoying lake to fish. It's got a lot of snot grass, so you can't really fish much on the bottom in a lot of areas. There's also tons of pleasure boats. I like fishing Buchanan Lake much more. It's got much less boat traffic. I caught my PB in a tournament there

My perspective from the Kingsland end of lake LBJ.
Boat Launching is what I did not research before retiring here.
If you don't live in a neighborhood with a boat launch then you will have to either use the Kingsland Community Park ramp @ the cost of $10.00.
Or the ramp at LBJ Yacht Club.
I am not sure of cost because I have only used it once and I cant remember the cost.
The number one issue I have found when launching alone at Kland community ramp is If a one of those Wave boats come by your boat is going to get tossed around bad.
Not to mention all the other boat traffic once spring break hits.
So like wtf242 said I prefer to launch at Llano county park at Buch.
If someone else knows of a public ramp on LBJ they may have a way different opinion.
Inks Lake State Park you must make a reservation just to launch your boat so you have to plan ahead.
Golfing in this area is great !

I am fishing Lake LBJ a lot but most of my experience has been in the past 3 years. Like Bklem above, I have a place out there so started fishing docks then in the past year I purchased a fishing boat. I don't catch a lot but do get a few good ones here and there. I am definitely learning how to bass fish. Seems like that you can catch fish off docks most of the time. Personally I haven't gotten many big fish off docks but I hear a lot of stories of people that do. I am one of those that watch a lot of youtube and follow various forums. Couple of things to me that make LBJ different is it's pretty clear. Other than wake board boats churning up water, you don't get a lot of rain or current to make it cloudy. Seems finesse tactics work better for me but that may be my status of a novice than anything.

Go to Google Maps, there are parks with very good ramps off the main the lake. Clear Cove Park, Crockett Park, Timber Hill Park, and Robin Hood Park just to name a few. These launches were $5, don't know if that has changed. They are good ramps and no one messes with your stuff. There many many more ramps on this lake!!!

I think wife and I are going to have down there next month to look at the area. The total Property Tax Rates around the areas are some of the lowest I've seen that have decent recreation, services, qualify of life, etc.

LBJ has suffered dramatically since the flood. Weights have been better this year but the last couple years were awful. The lake has changed a ton with the zebra mussels as well. Very clear now, which makes it tougher than it was outside of the spawn. Like others have said, pleasure boat traffic gets pretty bad.

Buch is a cool lake when it has water in it. It tends to fish shallow, so when it starts getting low, it takes a lot of the good fishable cover out of play. Can be dangerous to navigate at times and gets ugly in the wind.

The northern parts of Travis can be very fun and get very little traffic. Same comments about water level though.

All in all, quality of life in the hill country is pretty great. Will retire there myself.

LBJ - learn to skip docks well
Buchanan - when it catches water, the bushes are a lot of fun.
Travis has so many fish, can catch guadalupe bass for fun, and they aren't bad eating.
Marble Falls is nice to get away from heavy boat traffic and catch some chunks
