Lost rod locker keys-how to replace?

Lost rod locker keys-how to replace? - 05/23/22 07:25 PM

So my keys blew out of the boat at some point going down the highway and I do not have a backup for my rod box locks. I have a 2018 Skeeter ZX 225. I spoke with Fun n Sun and they were more than helpful as usual. Only problem is they thought the keys for that model were "universal" and gave me a set of backups they had on hand. Again, they were great to deal with but unfortunately the keys they gave me (small square top) were not the right size. I called Skeeter directly and they said I could give my boat hull # to the nearest dealer and they would know how to get me a backup set? Does that sound right? Any other ideas if that doesn't work?

I've heard this in the past...if you can see the number on the lock area where the key is you can find someone with that key number and theirs will unlock yours.

Skeeter should be able to help as well as I bet they have the full details on what lock system was used on your boat.

Take a picture of your locks and post it.

All my doors on my skeeter use the same key. When I replaced 3 handles, my old key fit the new ones. Then a few years later I ordered 4 more from a different vendor and my key fits those as well. Maybe it’s an “older skeeter thang”.
The vendors I bought the handles from said “there is only one key…if I had one it will fit the new locks”. It did. confused 3

Saying that….I’m sure a locksmith can cut that simple key pretty quick.

What good do locks do if the key is "universal"?

Locks keep an honest man honest.

They provide piece of mind. Two ways. Makes you think your rod boxes are secure and means you can borrow someone else’s key if you forget yours. Lol.

I had a 98 389 Javelin a while back and my neighbor had a fish and ski Javelin. His key would start my boat and vis versa.

I replaced the gummed up ignition switch in my Skeeter with a factory new Yamaha switch plate with two new keys My old keys work it as well as the new keys. Now I have four keys to my boat ignition.

Come to think of it, a boat would be so easy to steal. Wow.

Thanks for the ideas. Yes, my wife thought it was ridiculous when I told her the keys are supposedly "universal". We didn't even think about the ignition keys being the same. I'll call Nautical Mile today to see what they have to say. Easiest thing (but probably not the cheapest) may just be having a locksmith come out.

Got mine from the dealership. They took the serial number and gave me the correct key.

The fact that they replied to you is great. I lost my Skeeter's keys last year, and even though there were many attempts to reach their customer support, I still haven't got any responses. Probably, I got the wrong number, or email. Instead, I simply used the locksmith woodside park services to get me a newly pair of keys. You better check their official website and see if it fits you. Good luck!

you can take the lock out and take it to a locksmith and he can make you a key for it if needed

I asked one of the Skeeter dealers (service department) if I could give them the serial # and they didn't have a clue what that meant. Their shop is very good (always great service) so I'm wondering if I am asking the wrong question! That's two dealerships around here that didn't know how to get replacement keys. I can't be the only person around here who lost their rod box keys!?!?!? Taking the lock out might save me a little $$ vs having the locksmith come to me. At this point, if it's $100 to get a key made I'll pay it. If it's $101, I might keep calling Skeeter dealers.

I would call Texas Boat World in Killeen and talk to Cliff Brown. If anyone can help with Skeeter keys I bet he can.
