Rod Length Question

What would you say are the pros and cons of rod length. I am specifically speaking to the heavy fast rods. I obviously get that a shorter rod for jerkbaits or walking topwater makes more sense so you are not slapping the water when working the bait and what not, but those are more in the medium power class.

So pros and cons of say a 6'8" heavy fast versus the pros and cons of a 7'3" heavy fast.

Interested to hear back from you all.

They are designed for different techniques. A 6’8” heavy would be for jig fishing in close proximity to docks or heavy cover. A 7’3” heavy would be a good Carolina rig rod…made for long casts. The 7’3” would also be good for medium distance flipping and pitching, depending on the speed of the action.

The taper is usually different. The shorter rods will generally, be thinner and lighter at the reel seat and usually have a more moderate action. The longer rods will be thicker at the reel seat. There are exceptions to this. I have a bunch of 7 ft plus rods and I am toning it down some. I need to invest in better quality 6'8' to 6'10 rods. Not just for docks, but my fluke technique needs a shorter rod for accurate casting and skipping. I skip a fluke in open water with good success. I would like to get a dobyns 6104 when the come out with a split grip,, but that is really a med/heavy to me. I can't think of any reason for me to get a short heavy action rod though.

I like a longer rod for Carolina Rig or throwing big cranks. Rods are a personal thing. Throw what feels good to you.

A longer rod actually works better for walk the dog baits. You just need a slight side snap, not an exaggerated snap down. The muskie rods I use for walk the dog are all 8'-9' and I found it was much easier. Tried it on bass sized baits and was surprised. Half the time I don't even move my rod tip at all, I generate all action at the reel handle.

Appreciate the feedback. I primaily fish from a kayak, so the 6'8" seems to work well, but I like the hook set of the longer rods. I have a Dobyns Sierra 684 and am debating getting the same rod, just the 734 model...

I have both rods. You won't be disappointed with the 7'3" for a bunch of uses. I like the 6'8" for more precise use and the 7'3" for most everything else.
