Which do you prefer, cork, foam or Winn style? Why?

Cork. It’s grippy, wet or dry, shows character as it wears. It’s lightweight, and transfers vibrations almost as well as hard foam.

Least favorite is golf club stuff.

Cork. I don't really like my EVA rods as much.

Almost everything I have is cork, I have a couple with foam, and haven't had a chance to try Winn Grips yet. I prefer cork.

First choice is the one that is on the Shimano Adrena, second choice is the Winn grip. To me it is a toss up between foam and cork although you can have issues with both. Some of the foam grips get slick when wet, some do not. Some of the cork handles hold up very well some start getting un-smooth and begin to feel rough.

Winn grips for me. I just prefer the feel and comfort. I may be a bit biased though. I was a Winn user in my golfing days so it’s also familiar. Down side to them is they wear much faster and also degrade over time.

EVA. Cork has a tendency to give me "Chicken Skin". I do have some Cork grips, but I just prefer EVA.

Split foam....the cork after time does't look good and starts to chip off. I'm sure I could put something on to prolong the cork but give me foam.

If they dry out or get damaged, I wrap them with self fusing silicone tape--Wrap Fix is the most widely available brand (they have it at Wmart).

Is carbon fiber like this? It’s sensitive?

That's not carbon fibre.

The new Abu Garcia Veritas PLX Tournament Edition has the Carbon Split grips. I recently picked one up for a C-Rig rod. Only fished it once and felt the bottom pretty good compared to my previous rod. We'll see as we get into summer how I like it!

Re: Preferred Rod handle - 02/17/22 08:25 PM

Gary Loomis who sold out but now produces Edge rods summed it up well !
For a true transfer of feel from rod to handle---Carbon fiber is the best thing so far. According to Gary, cork or foam is going to absorb a small amount of the feel.
I have a couple of his early Edge rods with a solid carbon fiber handle. However the new Power Tackle rods with the carbon weave are my new favorite contact rods.

I bought into the Gary Loomis Edge rod hype and bought 2. I think they were assembled by drunk monkeys.

Sealing the cork when you first get the rod helps tremendously
