You got a new rod and reel. A 6'10" MH fast with a bait cast 7.1 gear ratio. What do tie on?

Pop R or smaller spinner bait. If it’s on the lighter side of MH should be a perfect jerkbait rod.

Spinnerbait or a jig

Re: What would you tie on? - 08/09/21 07:31 PM

Would depend on what my other setups are. Typically when I purchase a new rod/reel I have a technique in mind first.

For me personally I will only use a < 7'6 rod for topwater, spinnerbaits/chatterbaits, or jerkbaits. I prefer a medium action for smaller topwaters such as poppers and propbaits, and jerk baits. So I would spool with 20 lb fluoro and probably use it for spinnerbaits and chatterbaits, or spool it with braid for throwing larger topwaters like spooks.

I would agree personally, but if it’s a true med/hvy it would prob work ok (if it’s a Dobyns med/hvy then it’s definitely too light). I’m not talking about the kind of frogging where you cast 1/2 a mile. In my opinion that 6’10” with a 7.1 gear ratio is kind of a funky setup (my opinion) anyways. But then again, guys used 5’6” pistol grips for years and they managed to catch plenty of fish.

I have several rods in the 6ft 8in to 6ft 10in. range with 8-1 gear ratio reels on them. I use them for finesse fishing, weightless senko's, and flukes. Nothing "funky" about that set up. It works just fine.

You use a 6’8”-6’-10” med/hvy rod for finesse fishing?

Yes they are M/H with a soft tip and they work very well, and all of them are bait casters. You don't need to limit finesse fishing to spinning tackle only.

Also a M/H rod depends a lot on the manufacturer, they are all different in their ratings and actions.
