Harbor Freight Fish FInder?

Harbor Freight Fish FInder? - 07/21/21 12:18 AM

So im looking for a fish finder to set up on my kayak, and i stumble upon this fish finder from harbour freight: https://www.harborfreight.com/portable-fish-finder-62675.html?_br_psugg_q=fish+finder

Now, I'm 15 so I get a lot of my tinkering tools from harbor freight because they're inexpensive and work pretty damn well for making lures, messing around, and some casual work. But this brings me to the question if this even has the slightest chance of working well, or is it simply some horse [censored] piece of junk? It's only 45 dollars, so it may be a pleasant surprise if i decide to buy it. has anyone bought/used this fish finder?

I think I would stay away from that one. I just threw away a working old lcd. I bet someone might donate one to a young man. Where are you located?

I’d save your money and try to buy a used entry level Lowrance or Garmin.

Lol, for $44 why not???? I didn't know harbor freight started carrying their own bottom machine. I'll probably buy one anyway to see how well it works. I wouldn't spend a bunch of money on a name brand graph to toss around at a pond. If you're running a boat, even a small flatbottom or bass raider, then I'd get the Garmin Striker 4. $100 and a GREAT unit for small boats.

But if you're just busting up ponds, hell yeah I'd go for it!!!

Counterpoint: he’s almost halfway to the Garmin Striker and it’s a much better option.

If your 15 don’t cuss, learn a better way to communicate. Save your money and buy quality stuff and then take care of it, you end up saving money in the long run. Those are two life lessons old guys know.

I don't buy cheap tools because they frustrate me and do an inferior job to good tools. They don't last and they don't perform as well. Having said that, Harbor freight sells the cheapest junk on the planet, period. I'm not here to tell you what to do - but we can give you an array of accurate information, you'll decide what's best for you. And remember that good judgment comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgment (Will Rogers). That means make some mistakes, it's ok. Just learn from them.

I'm like several others on this thread...don't buy it. Save the $$$ and get an entry level Garmin, Lowrance, or Hummingbird. If I still had my older 520c, it would be yours. But I donated it to a buddy who's graph took a weight to the screen.

Yep, and just the fact a lot of the guys on this forum can probably out curse a drill instructor, our rules here prohibit cursing as a lot of youngsters even younger than you read this forum, and we just try to keep that type of communication from the forum.
Social media doesn't seem to mind, but here it's not accepted as readily.
I'm with the buy a name brand entry level that is time tested as with the Garmin Striker, which is a pretty good unit and will get the job done.

But it. It has fairly good reviews. Then you can do a you tube report & maybe the start to a fame and fortune.

I put a Garmin Striker 4cv on my bass raider 8 that I use to throw around in small ponds. Love that little thing. I literally have contour maps of neighborhood ponds and other ponds people don’t know about. The QuickDraw map is such an awesome feature. There are ponds I’ve been to that if you were on the bank, you’d have no idea how great the fishing is “offshore” without a graph.

For smaller entry units, Garmin IMO absolutely destroys the others. The little Lowrance and HB equivalent of the Striker don’t hold a flame to the Garmin. Best $179 I’ve ever spent

Now I’m bias to Garmin, I run all echoMaps on my big rig. But I’d be hard convinced that Lowrance or Humminbird’s small $150 units can do half the stuff that the Striker can

Daniel,

I have an old Lowrance 5" that would be perfect for your yak. I will give it to you, you will have to source the transducer but they are available and not expensive.

PM me if you want it.

Let me know if he takes you up on your offer. Which model is it? I think I have a bunch of old Lowrance transducers. I can send him one if I have one that is compatible.

Hey Harbor Freight May have cheap tools but they have the best tool boxes for the money anywhere around. My 2 General brand boxes are as good as Kolbalt, Mac and maybe some Snap-on

When you are 15, it is hard to afford Snap On tools. For a kid learning to work on things at home, Harbor Freight tools are great. That said, save your money for quality when fishing is concerned. You're out there to have fun, and it is not fun when electronics (or any equipment) malfunction/don't work as intended.

I have an old Humminbird I'll give you if you want to come to Van Alstyne to get it.

Cracked screen but it works. You'll need a transducer (not sure if I kept the old one) and cables.
