PowerPro braid issue

PowerPro braid issue - 07/08/21 02:54 PM

How often have you guys gotten a defective spool of Powerpro braid, 30# moss green? I've had break offs on hook sets on three occasions same day on two different rod/reels.

It has never happened to me, but I never use anything smaller than 50 pound.

That's the only braid I use and have never had any problems. Minimum test is 50lb for me, too.

Never, I've used the stuff over 15 years

If you are fishing around structure or a hard bottom, you do need to retie since it tends to fray the line and your sinker will fray the knot as well. If I do brake off on braid it is because I haven't retied my line in a while.

I went through the whole mono, fluoro, braid exercise and found PowerPro. I’ve got it on all my reels in 10 lb, 30 lb, 50 lb and 65 lb

NEVER a problem

I use 20 / 50 / 65.
Never a problem.

Are your breakoffs in the line or a knot failure? I use 20, 30, & 65# with no problems, tying a Palomar knot.

I had that same issue a while back with 30# and it was not in the knot, I assume it was just a bad batch I went to #50 and no more breakoffs

I had a spool of Vermillion Red 20lb on my wacky setup for almost 3 years. It finally got so broke in that wind knots were a constant issue. I couldn’t find another spool of the red, so I bought some Moss Green from Academy. It’s horrible. It frays up in random spots, doesn’t hold a leader knot well at all…and just plain breaks off. It is weaker than the 8-10lb InvisX I use for leaders.

FWIW, the new stuff is in a different designed package.

I’ve used about 6 miles of power pro braid in all different sizes and never had a problem.

I had that issue several years ago. I contacted them and they asked that I return it to them. I did and they replaced it and they tested the line I sent back and said it was not up their standards. Great people there at Power Pro!

Sounds like a Zebra Mussel problem.

This was my first thought as well. Power Pro has been very reliable, but braid will snap like a guitar string if it runs across zebra muscles.

I bought a spool of 4 strand that was breaking on me. Not knot failure.. never had an issue with the 8 strand. I switched to Daiwa J Braid several years back though so anything new issues, I can’t say.

I have 2 reels spooled with 30# PowerPro Braid Yellow and both of them have broken several times.

I thought I was doing something wrong but if someone else has had problems it makes me think it is a line problem. confused 3

I only use Palomar Knots and I know it is the line breaking because each time I have found the 20-30 yards of line and retrieved my lures each time. thumb

I’ve been using the 30# for over a year and haven’t had any issues at all. Been using 50# and 65# for several years and no issues there, either.

I have considered zebra mussels. But two different rigs with line from same spool makes it suspect as defective.

Re: PowerPro braid issue - 07/09/21 06:16 PM

Going to respool both rigs, if it happens again I'm going to use heavier line.

I heard there were issues with the early version of super slick v2.

Re: PowerPro braid issue - 07/09/21 06:54 PM

I had a bad spool of 30lb PP
it would break when just testing the drag on a spinning reel. I threw out a pop r, popped it 1 time and it broke 20 foot away from my rod. It was not an eyelet issue, just a bad spool. I still use 30 lb PP, the stuff is awesome. 1 out of the 15 spools I have bought over the last 15 years is not enough to run me away

I’ve never had an issue with PP

All 3 break offs were about 5-20 feet from knot.

Re: PowerPro braid issue - 07/11/21 02:05 PM

I've noticed there are weak spots. I did a test and tried to break the uni knot, double uni (might be the strongest knot I've ever seen for terminal tackle), loop knot and the palomar using big leather gloves from multiple spools of Sufx 832 30#, PP 50# and PP65#. I found weak spots in some places - but not like 10# weak. More like actual 30# rather than the 50# test we've come to expect from 30# braid. The PP line did the same in 50#. The line would break sometimes and sometimes I could pull it with a truck and it wouldn't break. Interestingly - None of those knots broke in my test. The 65# is good for skiers
