Any tips for hot July Bass Fishing?

(nights) Full moon is your friend, nothing better than fishing your favorite spots during the night on a full moon. Other than that it really depends on the type of lake your fishing. (Daytime) Right now my lake (grapevine) is still above the full level. All the brush that has grown up along the edges of the lake has become structure for bait, and the like. With the 88 degree water, it will likely be a early bite where the bass will feed. For me it will get much better when the large amount of brush is out of the water, and the fish move back onto the rock piles/and limited structure.


The big ones never missed a beat, and I would say that they are doing what they usually do. Deep water ledges, humps, and they main lake points close to the channel. If your graph has a built in map, check out those structures that are on the map out in deeper water. You might be suprised. But you will likely need to do some graphing, and see if you can find something out in a little deeper water. The thermocline will become a friend as the months progress. 6xd or deeper, carolina rig, or drop shot should be tied on somewhere in the mix.

When the going gets tough scale back. I will often bail on the big bite and whoop out the spinning rod with 6lb/8lb test with a (finesse power worm, drop shot, or smaller size craw worm). Smaller fish are better than no fish. Any marina you can find holds fish, but getting the bite will require some casts into the void where you can get hung up easily. Im chomping at the bit to get back out fishing, 24 days post op for rotator cuff surgery.
Have three more weeks before i get my left arm out of the sling. Summers can really be a killer, and my personal preference is to go out really early and fish for two to three hours before the sun rises, then fish until it gets uncomfortable. You really have to dress right for the heat. Long sleeve quick dry shirts will make 100 degree weather easy as long as your shirt is wet ( stay away from green, and dark colors) they get too hot.


For the lakes with moss, reeds, and large amounts of timber you will see people flipping into the pockets, but if you can dial in on a pattern on deeper fish you will have a more enjoyable summer. Be wary of the waypoint buzzards.

First light till 9am and 6pm till dark thirty. Yellow Magic and wacky worms will get you some bites. 9am till 6pm can be brutal.

Drink lots of water the evening before and on the way to the lake. Stay hydrated on the water.

July, Aug and most of September take a break. It’s too hot. Same for golf except the break is June to October. Or go way north and fish for some smallmouth.

Bring a lot of water and sun screen.
