Athens good one.

Athens good one. - 05/01/21 10:51 PM

Caught this fat fish today in 2-3 ft of water, skipping docks. Way under a dock, so I know it wasn’t on a bed. Obviously pre spawn and weighed 10.20. 23-3/4” length and 22” girth!!! The fatest fish I have ever held in my hands. [Linked Image]

Caught around 100 or so fish, 3 overs, and about 50/50 slots and unders. . No exaggeration. Went though 6 bags of watermelon red senkos and 2 packs of eagle claw wacky jig heads.

Nice one. Are you skipping those with spinning tackle?

Re: Athens good one. - 05/02/21 12:05 AM

Thanks !

It was a fun day. Caught this fish on my fairy wand with a 6 pound leader and didn’t have time to get out the net. It actually jumped clean outta the water 5 times. The last jump, she landed on the rear deck and slid back into the lake on the Skeeters sponson. I knew it was a goner, but she was hooked good. Right behind the upper jaw bone. Perfect. It was never able to saw on the line. I was then able to lift her over the side by hand.

Unlike how you’d expect, I wasn’t worried. I was laughing hysterically watching this fish jump. I never expected to land the fish.

Kinda cool.

Yes. The lake was a little high today. Some docks had 2-3” of skipping room under them, so I was side arming a spinning rod. I usually skip with a bait caster, if there is plenty of room. If I hit wood, the bait caster explodes! Haha. So I reverted back to a medium spinning rod and a Senko to avoid backlashes.

What length rod are you using for skipping? A 6ft 8in. bait caster is what I skip best with. I use a 2020 Tatula SV TW and that helps a lot keeping from getting backlashes. I haven't tried skipping with spinning gear yet.

I’m not 100% sure. I know it was one of my Lowrider rods. The “ShakyHead” rod. I think it’s a 6’10” medium/fast.
I normally skip docks with one of my Lizard Draggers. Depending on the lake, I will use the Diawa with 17lb InvisX, the Chronarch DC with 12lb InvisX, or the Lews reel with 50lb braid.

I will have to give that a try with spinning gear.
