Gel coat repair recommendations - 12/25/20 11:45 PM

I would love to hear reviews for gelcoat repair (bumped a hard surface) around or in Harris County. I really appreciate the help. This year really bent me over financially so i hope this isnt going to kick my in the nuts too hard. The area is about 10 square inches. Thanks

I have no experience but have been told by multiple people (fisherman) that Northwest Fiberglass in Montgomery is top notch but that they generally have a long turnaround time as they’re always busy.

10 square inches sounds like a fiberglass issue not a gel coat issue

Take the 3 hour drive to Toledo Fiberglass.

Get the Gorilla Hull while your boat is there. bolt

If its really just the gelcoat you can just wetsand it, put some new polish on the area, and buff it out. You can find a cheap buffing kit in the automotive section at walmart.

I used Northwest Fiberglass on 2920, east of Tomball back in early December. Found a stump with a rotted off t post in the top of it and got a long gouge down the bottom of my hull. I was happy with the job they did. I planned a time to bring it in and they were done in about a week. Friendly people and I thought his price was reasonable.

We use Marine Clean in Nacogdoches for any fiberglass work, and have been very pleased. Very reasonable as well.

Northwest fiberglass in tomball and West side fiberglass in Katy, are the only 2 I have dealt with. Have mainly used Westside, he does good work.

Taylor Boats in Dickinson has done work on my boats for the past 25+ years. They even completely replaced the transom on one my boats about 25yrs ago. He did some work for me about 4 years ago and you can not tell where it was repaired.

For main structure work in the Houston area I would use Toledo Fiberglass. If it's just finish work i imagine any of the long standing reputable shops would work great.

An additional thought depending on how severe the damage....

I had numerous scratches/gouges from courtesy docks/trees on my gunnels over 9 years of ownership. I decided to look into going the professional route after watching many YouTube vids and deciding this was probably something I really didn't want to tackle (especially as my boat has a glitter gelcoat).

I ran across the new 3M Perfect-It Gel Coat Compound and decided it couldn't hurt to give it a try using my orbital polisher. Worst that could happen is the scratches/gouges would still require professional repair.

I am still in disbelief as to the result... Only ONE of my deep gouges (into the glitter zone) did not 'rub out'. My boat looks like brand new and didn't take long. Unlike normal compounding processes where you have to start with a course grit and work your way up to finer and finer grits, with this product you select the most aggressive formula you think you need (I chose Medium) and that is ALL you use. With the polish/wax also built in, it does the entire job in one pass.

I would never have guessed... I did use a bit of light wet sanding with 600 grit on a couple of the deeper scratches and then used the 3M product and I couldn't tell there was ever anything there. Even the one super deep gouge still looks much better and I see absolutely no reason to take to a repair shop.... Worth giving it a try!!
