A buddy of mine and I fished with him on December 3. So I'll be checking my T. But so far I'm clean. My sister and seven members of her family have Covid and only her 94 YO MIL is hospitalized. So it must be pretty rough for Mark in that he is in the hospital.

Quick Pack story from about 25 years ago as told by my buddy:

“We were fishing fork in December and it was snowing. We went to LFM and Tiffany’s for lunch. We walk in and there’s a table full of guides sitting there, only other people in the restaurant. All we’re thinking about is getting warm and about that time, Pack (who they recognized) asks them who they’re fishing with? My buddy replies, “just us”. In that typical Mark Pack voice, they hear, “Oh, y’all just out messing around”, which my buddy took as you guys must be the 2 dumbest people on the planet!

We laugh to this day when we’re at LFM and watch Pack walk outside or go to the bathroom right before that check hits the table! We always make the same comment, “Pack ain’t messing around with that check!”

Quit messing around Mark, and get better!

Re: Mark Pack - 12/19/20 01:48 PM

Since we are telling Pack stories I will share one. Years ago Mark had slowed way down on guiding and was mostly running the LFT store and bait production. I had met him when stopping off at tge store and we became friends. We would fun fish and such when our schedules lined up. He was still fishing FLW then as well.
In November 2008 I broke my back at work during a housefire. The days after were crazy as I wa concerned would I recover, would I get to continue my career etc. A couple of days after coming home from hospital Pack calls me to check on me. He made sure to check to see if we were OK financially and he told me to focus on getting better and if I was unable to get back to working as FF that I always had a job at LFT if I needed it.
That meant the world to me and my family. That is just who Pack is though. He is always quick to help someone with a fishing tip or just some words of encouragement. More than one guide got the business started wirh help from Mark. Several have stayed at his place till they got on their feet.

I am glad our paths crossed and I have learned so much from Mark about Fork and fishing in general. The real treasure though are the Packisms that he throws out. Some great one liners. Proud to count Mark as a friend.

Mark is in a heavy weight bout with Covid. For those of us that know his sense of humor he would be quick to comment on here "hey! - this heavy weight needs to eat" or something along those lines.

As of today I have heard of no timetable on his stay in the Tyler hospital. All I can say is he is a strong fighter and fighting well against an ugly opponent.

TFF - please keep the prayers going for the Pac Man, the medical staff taking care of him and that he maintains proper O2 levels to get his rear end back home soon.

Re: Mark Pack - 12/20/20 02:50 AM

Fishing with Mark over three decades he is a legend in my household. Over the years he converted me to become proficient with the carolina rig throwing the french fry which in those days were the early 90’s and it was incredible, to throwing broom handles called “AC Plugs” watching them get tossed in the air with massive hits, to jigging spoons in the winter and finally throwing jigs in summer. Over this timeframe he made a Zircom flasher, Lowrance Eagle Mach 1 paper graph and every form of electronic seem like the holy grail.

He even proved that WD40 sprayed on a plastic worm was an effective attractant.

From the boats he drove such as Bass Csts, Rangers to Skeeter over the years he always made it appear they were the best boat ever for fishing offshore.

Get well Mark, you are in the thoughts and prayers of many folks you have touched over the years.

Mark is still fighting that strain of Covid that is one bad hombre.

He made some small steps forward the last two days with some much needed rest and a little nutrition. I'm sure he would rather have had a plate full from Seth's instead though.

He still has a longer that desired road to recovery ahead of him......

Keep the prayers going his way that his O2 levels stay stable and continues to improve as well as that his lungs respond to therapy and treatment.

Donald I believe Mark has read this before. Why do I say that ????????

I have attempted to find a balance of respect for the updates I receive vs. general updates on the TFF with the sole intention of focused prayers for Mark.

That being said as he has fought his way thru this he has been confused and disoriented - rightfully so with your lungs under attack.

The reason I bring that up is he was asked earlier in the week to tell the staff his full name.

His response was " MARK KARY PACK and I'm a FISHERMAN"

Thanks Donald!

P.S. he made a little more progress today smile

This is from Skeeter Fowler yesterday.

Update on Mark Pack....

This is from his wife this morning.... pls continue to pray for my buddy Mark Pack

From Donna

The nurse taking care of Mark the last two nights FaceTimed us before midnight (my Christmas miracle) and this morning before she went off shift. She is an angel. He’s doing good. Of course said he hadn’t eaten all day and was starving 🤪 which is a good sign. It was so very good to actually see and talk to him. He has a long road but he’d say, “it’s just a light snack,” like when he drove tournaments. I told him everyone is praying for him & he said ,”Thank You.” I told him we love him and he said he loves us too. Thank you all for your prayers. I think now that he’s seen someone he’ll feel better. I told him to leave the oxygen on!

Mark is a litter better today. He will start his 3rd week in the ICU and the doctors have said he won't be moved for a while. He is still on O2 cannula to maintain saturations levels and is dealing with what they call Covid Brain ( google it). He seems to be tracking better with some directions as of late - baby steps.

Keep the prayers over Mark. He has a long road ahead.

Stay safe

Re: Mark Pack - 12/27/20 08:45 PM

I had the pleasure of meeting Mark years ago at LFT when I was at Fork for my first year of fishing that lake. While in the store I saw him and we started talking and I told him we had one more day there and we had not done very well. He looked around to see who was listening and handed me a bag of ring fries. Told me to throw it out and let it sit and smoke a cigarette. I told him I did not smoke and he said smoke one anyway, lol. He said when the cigarette is done just lift up on the line and set the hook. Man, did that work! Never forgot that conversation and think about it every time I use a ring fry. Get well Mark

Chest tube out. Lung expanding as it should. FIO2 is at 70. Peep @ 10. Has to be 50/8 before they’ll do trials to see if he can breathe on his own. Feeding tube in so he won’t be “hungrier than a hostage!” There is no time frame but so far so good. Tiny improvements... I’ll take it. Thanks to you all for your prayers and support!

As someone who just fought a 3 week battle with Covid I am really praying for a complete and healthy recovery for Mark Pack and all of those afflicted with this virus. At my age and with Type ll diabetes and high blood pressure I was really concerned when I tested positive. Luckily for me fighting all of the different symptons I had to put up with and pretty much not being able to get around I never had to spend anytime in the hospital and my main concern of pneumonia never materialized. I am about 95% back to normal and one thing I am looking forward to is getting back out on the water and doing some fishing thanks to my wife and family and friends and their support during this ordeal.
You can bet I will not take it for granted to be able to get out and do things like fishing and I am always thinking of those dealing with this virus.
Please get well soon Mark.

Glad to hear you are doing better and well. I spent the holidays with Covid as well. Mine was milder when compared to what others are dealing with. But like you was very concerned at first even though I have no other issues. With me mine started out like cedar allergies. Then the headaches to end all headaches started about 3-4days in and became was extremely exhausted, lost all taste and smell and had stomach flu type symptoms. It’s really seems to affect everyone different. My household had it and everyone was affected differently. Through it all I never ran a fever and never had a cough or sore throat.

Wishing Mark and all those dealing with this the best and safe recovery.

I also believe in prayers too. We’re praying for his recover too. My wife’s brother came down with Covid just after Thanksgiving. He was ok for the first week then started getting worse. He had to go to the hospital. At first they had him on oxygen, then they had to put him on another type of oxygen. He was getting worse so they had to put him on a ventilator and he still got worse. They finally had to put him on a life support machine. He didn’t improve but it kept him stable. The doctors told us they would probably have to take him off of it after 3 weeks of being on life support. He was in really bad shape but on Christmas Day of all days he started improving. We call it the Christmas miracle. Just after New Years they were able to remove the life support machine and just a few days ago they were able to remove the ventilator. He has recovered tremendously. He still has to have some oxygen through his nose but it is minimal. The doctors are completely baffled. They were already trying to prepare us for what was likely to be his passing. He still has a long way to full recovery but it looks like he will make a full recovery. I can’t wait to go fishing with him again. It will be something really special.
We have constantly been praying for him and for all those that are sick and that need help. I believe there is always hope and to never give up that hope.
We’re also praying for Mark and his family, we know exactly what they are going through.

Re: Mark Pack - 01/08/21 10:12 PM

I pondered about starting a new thread so more of those that are praying for Mr. Pack would see it; or just leave it here. I decided to just leave it here as the word will spread. This is about the power of prayer through change in the way we pray. The bible calls this the inconvenience of prayer.

I had been praying for a friend for many days and nights with no results; so I decided to go see a old fishing friend that was a Pastor for 70 years. We talked and this is what he told me about Prayer and explained that his success in prayer comes from the following passage. Luke 11:5-12. If a man will inconvenience himself to provide for a needy friend, God will provide for our needs far more, since no request is an inconvenience to Him. The promise is not that we will receive whatever we ask if we just keep asking. God’s promise to His children is a promise to meet our needs, not our wants. And He knows our needs better than we do. The same promise is reiterated in Matthew 7:7-11 and in Luke 11:13, where the “good gift” is further explained to be the Holy Spirit.

I truly believe that this Pastor had more prayers answered than any other man alive and said it was done by simply changing things up.
- Where do you pray, he ask. I pray each night when I go to bed. Inconvenience yourself and kneel beside your bed to pray tonight.
- Pick a beautiful place outside to pray. Inconvenience yourself and make that walk in the dark to this beautiful spot like the flower garden or the far edge of your property.
- Pray during the day not just at bedtime. Inconvenience yourself to get away from others and go to that secluded beautiful spot like a river or lakeshore.
- One of the Pastor's favorite places to pray was setting in the window of the hayloft overlooking fields and all the farm animals; which was a great inconvenience for this 90 year old man to get up there.

The Pastor and I have prayed together many times out on the water. He always had a prayer list a mile long. Inconvenience yourself the next time you are on the water and say a prayer for Mark and all those that needs God's Healing Hand to touch them.

Re: Mark Pack - 01/09/21 10:32 PM

For those of you on this thread who have not heard, Mark passed away peacefully today. My buddy and I would go twice a year with Mark...once in the summer, and once in the fall every year. He is the best guide I have ever used. Our last trip with him was the Monday before thanksgiving, and he took us way into the back of birch creek to do some flippin...it was an amazing trip, one I will never forget....I just wish I could fish with him one more time. Rest In Peace my friend. 😢😢😢

Lots of bets lost a year ago. After 32 years as a Firefighter/Medic Arlington FD I(like most) thought this would be an old story by now. One year later my wife & I are fighting this monster. Both us are positive with every symptom of the worse case of flu you could have. Going on 2 weeks each. Saving grace for us so far is normal EKG and SPO2(blood O2 saturation) so far. Guys, do not ignore this stuff. If you are ill keep your distance. Telemed with your Dr..... If it becomes a breathing problem get to the ER! They are set up to handle you now. Mark is my age. Mark Pack was such a good ambassador to the North Texas Fishing community. He will be missed! He had worked so hard to get into shape the last couple years setting himself up for a good long life only to have this curse from the devil through China take him down. But he wins! Victory is Marks! Death was beaten by our Savior Jesus Christ 2000 years ago! Congratulations on your well earned ultimate prize Mark Pack! Peace to your family. You Are Missed!

Hard to believe that we are not going to see that Toyota with the MPack sticker at Lake Fork Marina. Mark was a great guide. It was always let’s meet at LFM for breakfast. They aren’t going to bite until we get there. His knowledge of the lake was amazing. It was “don’t go through here there are two big trees 10 ft apart. Always great trips with Mark. He was always willing to give a tip when you saw him. Always a happy guy. He was always willing to help others get there guide business going. One time when my brother had him booked he recommended Skeeter Folwer to us. I know they were close friends. The type of guy it was always good to be around.

Rest In Peace Pac-Man.

Prayers to the family.
