Rain Gear for the Cold

Rain Gear for the Cold - 12/15/20 11:21 PM

I have used a set of Mark Perry Hand me Down Cabela's Guide wear since Mark lost 50% of his girth and lost weight. They are 2Xl Talls,

I too have adopted a less fat approach to life and am thinking these mofos are toooooo big for me now.

I'd love some input on a mid range price insulated set of rain gear, Simms are super bad arse but more $ than I'd like to spend. Any decent recommendations ?

The best rain gear when it is real cold for me is my couch at home.

I have an older pro qualifier suit I wear and layer under it. Guide wear is awesome. They usually run a sale this time of year on it

Hard to beat the Cabela's Guide Wear!

I love mine but they haven't made me lose any weight! sarcastic

I had to choose a brand that offers Tall sizes and so many of them do not.

Aftco hydronaut.

Re: Rain Gear for the Cold - 12/16/20 02:30 AM

For real though, I have had the BPS100 setup for about 5 years. Heavy heavy use. With exception of the pockets coming unsewn on the insides of the bibs and a zipper that sticks a little on the jacket, they’re really good and keeping me warm and dry.
A wool sweater and a pair of sweatpants is all I need under them to fish in 30-50 degree weather. They get too warm in 65-70+ degrees.

another here for the 100mph, I layer fleece under if it is gonna be cold.
I don't go out any more if it is gonna be less than 40 tho.

I have a 20 year old set of Cabela's Guidewear which are great in cold weather. Too hot for much else though.

Cabelas Guide Wear Gortex bibs and jacket have given me about 10 yrs of warm/dry winters and they still look great. Get em when they have an online sale. Goto the store and try the sizes on there, get on store computer and order “online” for “store pickup” and walk out with them.

For the $$$, I gotta say that the Academy stuff is pretty darned good. My wife has had hers for about 5 years now and we have fished some some pretty brutal stuff in that time. She has complained about everything while on the water with me, from "front ending" her to "what was I doing when I practiced?" but I have never heard her complain about being cold or wet. That is all the proof I need to know the stuff is good.

Always had luck with my 2 sets of Guidewear they never let me down.
In saying that I just bought a set of Simms insulated.

Quality goretex suits. I have both bibs and the pants. I use the pant for less cold and less rain days and if it's really bad I put the bibs over the pants. Goretex parka on top over a light rain jacket. Some people say overkill but Im guaranteed to be dry no matter how bad it gets, over spray, etc. I never get insulated, I just layer up underneath

Got 2 sets, what is cold for you. Set 1 is BPS Pro Qualifier, layer up with fleece-great in mid 40's. Got a set of Aftco Hydronaught. Layer up with fleece and your good till your guides freeze over and still toasty.

Gill FG2 Insulated Tournament Suit is hands down the best suit I have ever worn. I fished Tuesday night on Sandlin in the wind and rain until about 12am and never got cold or wet. I will never be buying another insulated suit other than this one.

Re: Rain Gear for the Cold - 12/17/20 04:17 PM

I'd just make sure it was gore tex material and worry less about the brand. They have some new material that I don't have experience with but I have bought things in the past that claimed to be wind proof like gore tex but they were NOT. I prefer to layer underneath an uninsulated gore tex suit.

Re: Rain Gear for the Cold - 12/17/20 09:44 PM

I have pro qualifier gore tex. Very good for layering. My only problem is with the hood ballooning at speed.

Re: Rain Gear for the Cold - 12/17/20 10:09 PM

Also if it's just wind and cold, I use a quality insulated ski bib and a cabela's wind stopper jacket layered underneath, down vest, thermal etc. I only use my goretex on rainy days. Properly dry them then re dry them to activate waterproofing again. Eventually they all need another coating to repel water

A lot of people complain about the rain wear "not working" when they just need to use Nikwax on it to clean, revitalize, condition, and waterproof it! cheers

the dryer activates gortex by letting the fibers re-stand and bead water.

Worn the gravel gear from Northern Tool in the worst conditions and stayed warm and dry.
Great price also if you don’t mind looking like a neon banana (not a bad thing fishing from a kayak in dark, cold, rainy conditions)
