Bass fishing from pontoon

Bass fishing from pontoon - 11/07/20 11:33 PM

Anyone else out there bass fish specifically from a pontoon? I’ve bass fished for ~20 yrs out of a bass boat and owned 3 bass boats but recently(8 months or so), I have been bass fishing from a 24’ pontoon... Long story short, we ended up buying a camper and putting it along with my in-laws pontoon at an RV Park/Marina and have spent the past 8 months social distancing from our “camp”. I’m just curious if anyone else has transitioned into the pontoon world and decided to keep the bass fishing lifestyle happening?

i bought recently a G3 20' toon... my experience a boat is a boat..fish dont care what you fish from..what kinda a pole you are using.. But there definetily is a difference when fishing from a toon..you can still use trolling motors..Fish finders and the like...the wind is a different animal all together..that is the only monster i usually fight when on the water...I say have fun...and welcome to the Pontoon family..Good luck, fair winds and tight lines

Much agreed, that wind is something else! I fished without a trolling motor on the thing up until about 3 wks ago. Having a trolling motor has really changed it for me! Btw- our pontoon is a Suntracker 24DLX Fishin Barge and I doubt I’ll ever go back to a bass boat. I’ve just gotten too used to the space and comfort on the water a pontoon provides.

People pay less attention to where you are fishing I've noticed when I'm in the pontoon. I have a goal of winning a smaller tournament out of the toon, but I always feel the need to be on the complete opposite end of the lake at some point during the day... And I haven't been fishing many tournaments lately, but one can still have a dream. Lol.

I’ve noticed that too. The marina/RV park where I keep mine has Sunday morn tourneys that I am thinking about entering. Problem is they are pulling 25# bags of bass lol. Wonder if there would be enough of a follow for a Pontoon Bass League? Lol

I think your fishing style would be a huge consideration. If you are a “bank beater” who regularly fishes up in the shallows of stump filled lakes than a “toon” would suck. Otherwise go for it!

It’s bass fishing so there would be a few show up with 300’s on a Tri-toon wearing a helmet with two power poles in no time.. haha. Best of luck!

So far I’ve been really impressed with the draft of my toon. I’ve been in some pretty skinny water with no issues other than needing to trim up my big motor. Those stumps sure can do some damage to peoples boats, sometimes I see people running wide open and just cringe, knowing how close to surface the tree stumps are and a lot of time, sandbars...

Hahahaha, that’s no lie! I have seen a few toons that have the dual motor set up :o, it’s nuts and awesome at the same time... Can you imagine a bass tourney right before start time and looking out seeing 45 pontoons floating and waiting to go? Lol It would be epic!

Anyway, glad to be here. I’m really interested to see how many people bass fish out of these rigs and also how I can adapt the posts about bass fishing to fit this type of set up...

Haha! That is exactly what someone will do in pontoon bass tourneys, I can see it now. That’s a pretty cool video, load up the wife and kids and go Mach 1 across the lake lol

How many are on a pontoon team? 8? 10? I want on the team.

I’ve seen a tri with a 450r

My brother in law has a pontoon that we fish out of occasionally. I enjoying being about to move around on the big platform.

The fish don't seem to mind, but I'll keep my Ranger for now.

I’d think 10 would be a little much, probably stick to the 8 people range... lol

It’s definitely a lot more room than I ever had on my bass boats. Pitching a worm is a little more challenging due to the rails but I’ve learned to make it work.

I recently saw this badboy while fishing on Lake Travis. Two Yamaha 450 hp engines.

Their only 425 HP, Yamaha don't make a 450

OK, sorry. I screwed up. Don't know why they put puny 425 hp engines on their pontoon boat. I would be ashamed.
