Falcon Lake Tackle Rainfall Contest - 07/24/20 05:55 PM

OK.. So there is all this hype about rain coming to south Texas due to TS Hanna.. We'll see what happens..

Make your guess how much rain will fall here at the FLT official gauge and if you're the closest you will win a fine prize package of stuff I can't sell.. And some good stuff as well.. Ties will be decided by coinflip or there may be several prize packs awarded at my discretion..

You are predicting the total accumulated rainfall between the time of this posting and Tuesday morning (July 28) at 8:00 AM..

And your prediction must be to the nearest hundreth of and inch.. So a prediction should be something like 1.27 inches or 8.67 inches..

And if anything gets weird I reserve the right to cancel all this [censored].. But I don't see that happening..

All predictions must be submitted by midnight Sunday, (July 26).

Thanks for playing along.. What the hell else are you doing..

Can I take back my comment about Brownsville not getting a drop..............pretty sure I went the airport and missed my boat with that comment.

Watching weather channel, its up to 90 mph, its a sure enough storm.

Most of the rains looks to be on the south side per what they are saying, South loaded.

Might take a few days, but the water will get there after it fills up all those little reservoirs in the Mexico mountains first

Re: Falcon Lake Tackle Rainfall Contest - 07/26/20 08:34 AM

Not really. 95% of that rain showing will go to the river below Falcon or down to the gulf. The Rio Grande watershed watershed from here to Amistad is very narrow in the United States anyway. If Hebbronville (60 miles north) gets rain we won’t see it.

stay safe and thanks for keeping us updated on the storm..

you probably going to get a new roof out of this.....there is some truth in the old saying "anybnody who likes pine trees never had one fall on their house......we had a hurricane come through couple years ago and big pine tree fell on my house.....kinda aggravating having the construction going on but i did get a new roof out of it.....

Looks like it's too dry on the north side of that storm. Gonna miss it by about 50-75 miles. It's crazy it's not pulling the moisture back around like it does typically. Really needed it in the mountains west of falcon

Re: Falcon Lake Tackle Rainfall Contest - 07/26/20 01:56 PM

My 2.5 inches may be way on the high side. I doubt Zapata/lake will get an inch, all down south. I've lived on the coast for a long time now and never seen a storm South loaded for rain like that one.

I don't fish Falcon anymore, but I did off and on for a long time. I really wanted to see Falcon and Choke get water.

Re: Falcon Lake Tackle Rainfall Contest - 07/27/20 12:48 PM

Unofficially (but close) the total is about 5.25 so far.. But we have about 24 hours to go.. Should get a little more today and tonight.. According to prognostications.. We had some good training storms yesterday and that was when we got the bulk of the rain..

Lake is on slow rise.. Creeks will be draining into lake for several days and we'll see what we catch.. But it is not going to be huge..

We should not be releasing any water of consequence for a good while.. And water saved is as good as water caught..

The real rain fell south of the dam and lake tributaries.. Near miss..

James, any word on the lake levels in Mexico? I'm sure Sugar will be full with all the rain that fell in Monterrey, but did Don Martin catch any water?

Would have thought the big Mexican creek down south, Salinillias would have caught some water being down south with the way the bands wrapped around but maybe not. As dry as things are the as far south the storm when probably missed.

I think I may be the closest at this point with my guess of 5.22". If I win, I would like to donate the prize pack to a High School team or some other kid that could use it.

Re: Falcon Lake Tackle Rainfall Contest - 07/27/20 07:23 PM

I’ve poured out 4” from my gauge. Most of it Sunday afternoon. It’s probably more because Sunday at 7 am I only had 1/4”. I can’t see the gauge being accurate with the rain coming in sideways.

Re: Falcon Lake Tackle Rainfall Contest - 07/28/20 01:25 PM

Yesterday moved the needle a lot down here for rainfall totals, with over two inches of rain in the day light hours, mostly in the afternoon. Some places got more..

In any case, in the official contest gauge here at FLT, we got 7.92 total inches of rain during the contest period..

And that means, (Drumroll please..) if you look on page 6 of the thread, H20Seeker guessed 7.86 inches, and that puts him closest just missing the actual by .06.. Six hundreths of an inch..

And according to my calculations he is the closest.. If I [censored] up I am sure you will let me know.. And if I did I will award equal prizes.. But I don't think so..

Congrats to H2OSeeker and be looking for a PM from me!

Thanks for playing along.. Gave me something to do..

Big question is----how much do you expect the lake to come up? Asking for a friend.

Lake on slow rise.. We might catch a foot or two from the low.. Maybe a bit more.. We're already up about a foot.. Of course we are still under a flood watch and what falls now runs!

Nice job H20. The handle is apropos! James thanks for the diversion tactic! That was fun. As Agent 86 would say, " missed it by that much"! 7.77 was my guess.
