I’d probably buy a new Shimano reel and maybe one other type. All for comparison purposes. That Diawa Tatula I bought a while back is a terrific reel, and I’d see how it compares to the Shimano, and maybe a Lew’s or an Abu.

For one Combo for $500 I would buy a 7' 1" MH Fast St. Croix Legend Tournament rod with a Lew's BB-1 speed spool.
If buying Two combos for $500 I would buy 2 Pro Qualifiers with different gear ratios and then either St. Croix Mojo bass rods OR Carbonlites.

Rod - Dobyns Champion XP Series, $229-289 (length/power/action depends on technique)
Reel - Shimano Curado K ($179) or SLX DC ($189)
That will put you a little below $500, so use what's left for some good line
