Amistad Closure

Amistad Closure - 07/07/20 06:47 PM

Just to let anyone who's coming from out of town, the NPS has closed Lake Amistad effective Friday night's from 8pm until Monday Mornings and Holidays until further notice. No tournaments will be re-scheduled at this time until a firm date for reopening has been completed. This is due to the lack of social distancing and people leaving the park a mess.

Re: Amistad Closure - 07/07/20 09:38 PM

Speaking to some guys down there, Covid is only part of it. The parks are being trashed, vehicles leaving the trails and driving all over the place, and people showing no respect for others. The Park Rangers have written a ton of tickets but people don't seem to care. I got some photos from last weekend and there was trash thrown all over the roads and picnic areas. At least it's still open during the week, might need to take a few days off and head down there.

All public access points, swimming area's and ramps will be closed to everyone.

Sounds like an open door policy for day light Cartel operations on the southern end.

Re: Amistad Closure - 07/07/20 09:49 PM

Not quite. BP and Rangers will still be out there. If anything, this hurts their cover.

They just don't drive marked boats and have eyes everywhere over the lake not just human..Launch in Mexico you can be on the lake..

Re: Amistad Closure - 07/08/20 12:20 AM

Word I got was, a big party at 454, scum just up and left and it was trashed. Also people fishing and swimming at the docks while boats were trying to launch or load, fights broke out. Sheriff was called out too many times and he had enough of it.

We better find our way back on track soon or this mudhole is going to dry up.

The normal hard working fisherman that are respectful are not the ones doing this. It's the party crowd and newbies on steroids. It's happening at most lakes but some worse than others. Some municipalities just don't have the resources to control it..

Why would closing the lake to the gen pop increase illegal activity on the lake? I can assure you LE is still there and with less legitimate traffic, spotting illegal activity should be easier. hmmm

Spent 5 years straight on the lake, never once did I see someone try to cross while my boat was visible from the Mexican shoreline, thank about it.

I grew up on the lake and spent 14 years as a Border Patrol Agent, trust me, I know the game!

Re: Amistad Closure - 07/08/20 02:10 AM

More traffic allows them to blend in better, less traffic on the lake is absolutely not beneficial to smugglers. Like I said, the LEO coverage on the lake will not diminish.

Go fish during the week!

Thanks for starting the post yesterday 6Boomer.

Re: Amistad Closure - 07/08/20 06:20 PM

The trash problem can probably be fixed. NPS has no problem requiring a boater to pay a day use fee and what do they do with that $. Charge the park users as well. Make it enough per person so that you don't have to charge the boaters MORE to clean up the trash from the park users. If the park users litter and get caught, ticket them, make them pick up the trash and follow them OUT of the park.

Re: Amistad Closure - 07/08/20 06:28 PM

Covid has become a good excuse for various organizations to abandon things that they really don't like doing. High on the list of those things is government organizations, municipalities, associations, etc closing parks and public facilities. These types of facilities very rarely pay for themselves with user fees. You are taxed to pay for them, but of course that money is wasted. We will see more of this in the name of public health.

This x100. There is already a gate there. Just close and lock it. Put some concrete blocks on each side and problem solved.

trash an other illegal acts can be fixed by arrest of the ones doing the misdeeds but its easier to punish the law abiding sheep than arrest the bad actors.

A friend of mine posted pics on Facebook of several areas that were trashed by inconsiderate a-holes. I go to the lake a lot and it’s never been this bad. Very frustrating to see this!

Re: Amistad Closure - 07/09/20 07:56 PM

It happens everywhere and it is sickening.

Alan Henry is a beautiful lake and have great facilities with trashcans scattered throughout the park area. But if you walk to the shore from any of the camping areas its just flat out disgusting. We usually drive to J.B. Thomas once or twice a week to just let the dogs swim and we almost always return home with at least a garbage bag full of trash left behind by others.

I just don't get whats so hard about packing out all of the garbage you create. Apathy is a terrible disease that is often times hereditary.
Posted By: ssmith

Re: Amistad Closure - 07/09/20 07:59 PM

so the banks were trashed they have folks hired by the state county an federal govt to clean up the property if law enforcement enforced the laws an gave the folks tickets for trashing the place it would stop but its easier for the govt just to shut it down an they dont have to deal with it an the tax paying law abiding folks suffer the consequences again.

So they close a hundred miles of water over trash and fights? If that was the case most lakes in the state would be closed.

The Superintendent was probably pushed by the county judge again and used this as a partial excuse beside the lack of social distancing to close it on the weekends. The county judge closed it temporarily a little while back but did not have the jurisdiction to close the park down. My opinion only.

Re: Amistad Closure - 07/10/20 12:16 PM

I think a big part of the problem is that people have been locked down for months. Not many places to go without a diaper on your face. People are fed up and wanting to blow off steam. Agreed this is NOT the way to do it. This CoronaVid is bringing out the absolute worst in people.
