Installation should also include appropriate configuration so that the equipment actually works properly after installation. Let's just say that may not always happen, and maybe the knowledge to do so is lacking.

Shut Up and Fish are great if you like someone that is not worried about being friendly or helpful. Sure, he'll install whatever you need, but don't ask him to explain something.
I have used Dave Goodsen at Shut Up and Fish for many years. Had him install graphs on 3 boats, and he has always explained all functions to me in depth. Although I can be dense on tech stuff. Had an issue with my front graph that no one could seem to figure out at the dealer. Took it to him and in 5 seconds he told me the transducer was not the correct one for my trolling motor. I had read all kinds of suggestions, called Humminbird, took it to the dealer, no help at all! He ordered the correct one, installed it, and it was perfect. I am not saying others experiences aren't valid, but my experiences have been nothing but positive. I recommend Shut Up and Fish absolutely!!

Re: New graph installers? - 06/17/20 02:34 PM
My interaction was very different. I explained the problem, he asked if I called Humminbird. I said I had and he said, "Well, I'm not going to tell you anything different than them". That was it. Like I said, not helpful and everyone has a bad day. Maybe that was his day, but I am not not used to that kind of reaction in the service industry.
That said, the All Star guy came out, looked at it, tried a few things and actually repaired it. He was extremely friendly and he wanted to earn my business. He did.

Re: New graph installers? - 06/17/20 03:53 PM
My interaction was indirect, but equally disappointing for the premium rate specialty service industry. I fixed what he physically installed but couldn't make work properly in multiple attempts, either out of not caring, or lack of fundamental knowledge. I don't know which it was. What I saw was a reassurance that doing my own is the wiser choice as I'd have to question why I'd pay for a failed install.

Re: New graph installers? - 06/17/20 06:15 PM
Well I hate to give bad reviews but it is what it is. I met David years ago when he was just starting out and working from his house. I bought a graph from him, but I installed it. It was a good price and I was very happy. Last year bought a new to me boat and wanted to install an extra HDS12 at the console and a few more items. After having read so many glowing reviews and remembering a good experience with him on my first purchase years ago, I decided the drive from Austin to Lewisville was worth it. I purchased a 4 bank charger, mounting bracket, a point one puck, and asked him to install those items, which he did along with a used HDS12 I had purchased. But he was grumpy from the git go. He couldn't get the back panel off to properly run the wiring from the new charger so he just ran them in front of the panel, which I said no big deal. The two issues were: 1) he couldn't get my HDS12 to read the transducer, 2) now since he wired in the new charger my batteries run down which did not happen before the new install. I called and scheduled an appointment to get the two issues fixed, which meant another trip from Austin. Still couldn't get either issue resolved. His response to the graph was, "it either needs the new updates or your ethernet ports/cables are bad on the unit". Call Lowrance. Long story short, I paid a guy here in Austin to fix it and he resolved them with neither a unit update or a new ethernet port or cable. Bad connections and poor workmanship.

Well, I can give a real time update/review of Shutupandfish this afternoon. Just dropped my boat off this morning to have a HDS unit installed on dash. Replacing existing unit and will have to get a little work done on the faceplate to fit the new unit. David was quick to get it in and fair on price. I'll report back on the quality of the work but so far everything has been very good. I'm a relative newbie with the electronics so I am hopeful he can walk me through a few of the basics.

I called "shut up" last Fri. for $10,000 worth of Electronics and trolling motor. David was pissed off, and irritated. I was open for advice and observations. One word answers, if I ask a question. Very unusual treatment from someone in sales. Told me how busy he was.
I told him I would call back at a better time. Called back Mon. same attitude. He told me he was working on a boat... "what do you need"? I am driving to Texarkana for my new equipment. Jones Trolling Motor and Electronics. Nicest, friendly people you can imagine.

Re: New graph installers? - 06/17/20 10:13 PM
My only “Shut Up And Fish” experience: my sons purchased an Ultrex from him for a retirement present for me(32 years in the fire service). It didn’t have the MEGA transducer. They didn’t know that mattered to me. Brand new, still in the box with a receipt in hand. I was told by David “NO RETURNS”! Not even if I pay the difference and a restocking fee or something? “NO”! Then I asked him about purchase and mounting a new Hummingbird graph on console. I wanted a new Helix 10. He would do it but refused to connect(or add if necessary) to an in hull 2D transducer so I could read depth...while on plane. “You have no need to look at anything except GPS when running”. I have an thru-hull transducer now for sonar when running and I want to stay with this. Often I run in areas that don’t even have mapping and I want to be able to read things when under way. The operative words were: “I WANT”. Didn’t matter to him what the customer “WANTED”. Needless to say I have an Ultrex that does not(can not) meet all my expectations and didnt waste any more time with him. Glad so many have good experiences with him but that was mine. I apologize if this is seems offensive to post your real life accurate experiences on a FORUM but I’m going to hazard to guess the OP wants ALL the information to assist him with his decision.

And that's why I didn't come on here when it happened last year. Benefit of the doubt. I thought just what you thought. "I got screwed but EVERYBODY else had great service". Evidently not. If ya screw enough people word will get around. I guess people are starting to speak up. Boat lives matter.

Update to my post yesterday-all good at ShutUp. Took my boat in on short notice (which is awesome because I have a tournament in two weeks) and had it back in my garage before the end of the afternoon. Easy in, easy out if you're in the general 121 area. Granted it wasn't a huge project but looks like everything was done very well. Took my new unit through a quick walk-thru while I was in the shop and everything is in excellent working shape. (true test will be once I get it on the water for the first time) David was as nice as could be expected. I'll definitely go back to ShutUpandFish for any future electronics work.
Now that said, it's been a long time and way before I even knew about ShutUpandFish, but in the past, Southwest Parts and Allstar (in Lewisville) have also done very good work for me on trolling motor repair. (not electronics)
Well, there's always two sides to a story. Most of us who have been in business for many years understand you can satisfy 10,000 but it's usually the ones who are unhappy who tell their story. I doubt that any of us who have had thousands of customers have a 100% satisfied customer record, no matter how hard we have tried to please.

I had Shut Up and Fish install Garmin graph and transducer. Needles to say, I had to rewire everything and he was not Concerned of the issues I was having immediately after his install. He told me to call Garmin. I called Garmin and got everything corrected and reinstalled by myself. I also got back in touch with him to let him know what to watch out for with future installs, so this wouldn’t happen to anyone else. I was very considerate and just trying to be helpful
and I didn’t receive a reply.

IMO.. if you ask a guy what size wire he runs to the bow, for this modern day load of electronics, if he says #14, that will explain the rest of the install.
If all you require is that it works almost anyone will do, you're not really screwed unless you realize it.

8ga for a 5 amp circuit? My kinda overkill!

Any opinions on graphs being wired to the switch at the console? Nothing but trouble for me over the years if all the graphs aren't run to the battery.

Well let me say this on that topic... both of my Humminbird Helix units were installed the way you just described by the first shop that had my boat and I had NOTHING but interference and all that shop cared about was that the units worked when it left his shop. The shop even forgot to put my strap onto my Ultrex, again just cared that the stuff worked nothing else. I contacted Dave at shut up and fish, made an appointment and he rewired both Helix units as they should be, straight to the battery and even walked me through how to use everything.
Nothing but respect for Dave from me

I have my two Lowrance Carbon, a SonicHub, NMEA network, and a Hydrowave turned on and off via the main power switch. It’s all in how ya do it. I use the main power switch to power the “normal” stuff and it also activates a 30/40 single pole relay that latches 12g supply for the graphs and stuff.
I used to get 1.2 volts less when using the factory pre-rigged wiring and fusing for the accessories. Now, via the relay and larger high quality wiring and relay, I get a very negligible voltage drop. Millivolts.

You're burning power to energize the relay, and asking for it to fail one day when you need that equipment most. Then you'd have to stop fishing to wire around it. What solved the issue is the proper gauge wire feeding power (and there should be one for Ground also, most don't realize). Boat harnesses are often built with wire that's under-size gauge when added electronics devices are considered as add-on.
You could do the same thing with good gauge wire to a bus at the console, and a simple high quality waterproof switch (will better guarantee millivolt-max drop as well or better than a relay), if you wish to be able to power it off when the boat's main power switch is preferred to remain ON. Why do you even need to be able to disconnect power to most of those things you listed? The only one with a parasitic drain is the power drop for the NMEA network. Everything else will do a shutdown to cold-off. The sonic hub will power up and down based on the yellow control wire from a graph, but you could interrupt that with a toggle if you wanted to be able to keep it powered down on tournament day, for instance. (The voltage on the yellow control wires is non-critical, and just a couple of milliamps.)

I'm amazed that so many think there is something magical about "straight to the battery". There isn't, and that isn't what is fixing the chronic problems. Proper wiring, first and foremost, must use the appropriate gauge wire, and this item alone is what corrects a majority of the issues people have. The second one is bad connections, whether they be crimps or screws on a bus bar, you name it. Are those of you with 3 graphs and 3 or 4 more other things running 5 or 6 power runs to the battery? That's senseless, and inefficient! A fuse panel under the console makes sense. The power for this is a total of TWO (one red, one black) wires to the battery - but of a proper gauge, such as 10 ga. for boats that have numerous items. With a new fuse panel under the console, you can skip the problem-plagued fuseholders on each power cord. The power cord for many items can go direct to that new fuse panel, where a proper size fuse is installed for each item. None of this is "straight to the battery" but it's actually the proper way to wire marine electronics.

10 ga. will carry 10 amps 30 feet with 3% or less voltage drop (stranded wire, DC power)
10 ga. will carry 5 amps 60 feet with 3% or less voltage drop (stranded wire, DC power)
Your run was probably not over 20 feet, and the stated load was 5A, so I bet it wouldn't drop more than 1-1.5%. The 8 gauge was a waste of money, and a little more added weight.

The trouble you had was unlikely to have been caused by the switch at the console. It was more likely the boat's multi-spliced wiring harness getting power to that console switch with insufficient wire gauge for the extra loads you were adding. You can have a switch, but the power to it needs to be provided properly. Though, you should never shut down modern graphs by killing power. They are essentially computers with operating systems that need a proper shut-down using "power down" on each unit. Therefore, the switch is moot, unless you are using it for power to a sonic hub, NMEA network power lead, etc.

Zach at Southwest Marine Electronics does great work!
I would love to help out, I build each harness to your boat using Marine 10ga wiring. I can perform a full boat setup or diagnose a wiring concern. I also offer on the water setup and training with you after the installation.
Most of you know James Biggs, I performed a full setup on his Bullet. Hit him up for a reference! You can also check out my facebook page.
