Yamaha 200 HPDI Repair

Where's the best place to get your Yamahammer worked on? I have an engine that wants to starve itself for fuel at ide, then when I feather it and it tries to get on plane, it wont, seems like its only running on 3-4 cylinders. I can pump the bulb, and it will run for a while. If I am lucky, and it gets up on plane, I can run until I slow down to idle, then it starves itself of fuel and dies. HELP is appreciated

First Step is to check the compression. If it IS running on 4, and the other two have not compression, you have a major power head problem. You need to know that before you start anything else.
Second Step if compression is within 10-15% on all 6 cylinders is to do a leak down test.
Third thing is to look at the condition of the plugs and see if it appears all six are firing. If it appears they are then the fuel system is probably the next step.

Maintenance of the Fuel Filter system on a HPDI is critical to the way it runs AND it's longevity. I have a VZ225 HPDI, I expect your motor is almost the same as mine. If so, here is what needs to be done, probably annually. You can do this yourself but it takes time and patience:
6 Mystery Filters, one in each injector, About $1 each but are the most difficult of all the filters to change. Most folks elect to just pull the injectors out and send them to be flow tested and calibrated. Cost about $25 ea. and they come back to you with new mystery filters.
2 Mystery Filters one in each High Pressure Fuel Pump. Same filter as above, very easy to change.
1 Water separator filter on the side of engine under the cowling. This is where the fuel line from the tank hook us. It is a clear plastic container with a red float inside it to indicate the water level. The filter inside needs to be replaced. Many of these plastic containers get damaged because they are sometimes hard to screw apart. If it damaged and needs replacing, it is about $100. They make a special tool to screw it apart, but a lot of folks say using the special tool is how they get damaged in the first place. I did not buy or use it.
1 Electric Fuel Pump Filter inside the VST Tank mounts on the bottom of the electric fuel pump inside the tank.
1 In Line Fuel Filter mounted just above the VST tank. Hose clamp holds one end but a tricky little connector is on the other end and makes it a challenge to get out, just be patient, it will come out if you hold your mouth just right.
1 Water Seperator Fuel Filter inside the bilge of your boat. If there is not one there, you need to add one and change it often, It is cheap insurance and takes about 3 minutes to change it.

There is also 2 Each Low Presure Fuel Lift pumps that may need to be replaced as well. They are about $40 each and pretty simple to replace.

You will need to search the internet for instructions to do all this but it can be done for around $250. A shop is going to hit you for more than a grand to do this, I expect. It ain't rocket science, but you do need to do so research. BBC (Bass Boat Central) is a good place to go for information and the guys there are very knowledgeable and helpful. What is just posted seems daunting, it ain't. If you have Zero mechanical skills, then maybe it is but if you are just average, you can do this.

Great info above lurenthewind! I wish I would've seen this before I had to spend hours researching to find all the filters and part numbers. I just completed all of this on my Yamaha and was able to pull it off. The only issue I had was the quick connect that holds the in line filter above the VST failed and I had to wait for a replacement for 2 days...

I use Service Marine out at Lake Fork for my HPDI.

I had same issue with my mercury and it ended up being a flat diaphram gasket in fuel pump had a tear in it.
