Probably gar. Or bowfin. Got any gators in there? Maybe small gators too.

Infection in tail from spawning

That's called fin rot from spawning. They fan the beds pretty hard and doing so it rub it's raw opening their tail area for infection. That fish should be healthy in a few weeks pending it was released back to continue life.

Dang nice fish regardless! Private water? And I have caught some spawning bass through the years that had some pretty worn down/bloody tails but that second pic sure looks chomped on!

Not saying you did it or if that’s what it even is..... but looks like a bad snag mark to me. 2nd one, no idea.

Wow! No telling what caused that on the second fish.

I think a turtle is too slow. Gators won't chase fish very much even as they're lazy, not that Texas has a lot of gators. My vote goes to alligator gar.

That's what you call "Workin' a bed to the bone"!

Great fish, btw....

I had to trim that tail a couple of weeks ago so it wouldn't be in the slot...……...

no idea on the top pic, second pic could be from a common bacterial infection that happens during the spawning process.
