i asked myself the same thing! there were no marshals, so they asked us to send over regular updates so they'd have blog content throughout the tourney day. no good deed goes unpunished, right?! i just texted my weights in the rest of the tourney hammer

Last day of Redman all American with just couple minutes to go,I hung a 2 1/2-3lb bass instead of taking a minute or so more time to lip the fish,I swung him over the side and 20lb line I had just retied broke......finished 2nd and cost me $80,000......

I really believe when it's your time to win,you will and it just wasn't my time...took a little while to get over it but looking back it was probably best thing that could have happened to me...at the time I was 53 years old and nearing the highest earning years of my business career but I had a couple of bosses above me that I was having some real problems with..... had I won,I might have been foolish enough to quit my job and become a pro fisherman....

At least it didn’t have a cull tag in it. Lol. That’s my own personal move.

When you do something like that it makes you question your sanity.

I took six fish into weigh in at Fork one day. At one point that morning we had 10 fish in my livewell. We were whacking them. Once we got to ten I told my partner to keep fishing while I got my balance beam & culled down to the best five (or so I thought). The livewell on my Bullet was black and very hard to see those fish in there. We keep fishing & cull a couple more times during the day.

We get to the check in dock and start bagging the fish. I get 5 in the bag and OOPS- there is one more in there. I pull out my balance beam again and we cull at the check in dock. My partner takes the bag and heads to weigh in. I go load the boat. I get back to the pavilion and we have won the event with the largest sack of Unders ever weighed in an event on Fork up to that point. It was 11.97! My partner goes to the poly trailer and comes out a few mins later and gives me the thumbs up.

After the weigh in the TD comes over to me looking like his dog just died. He tells me another competitor saw us culling at the dock. I confessed as I thought we had done no wrong. Stupid me thought since it was a team event we could have 10 fish in the livewell. Doh!!

I voluntarily withdrew our catch and took a GOOSE-EGG for the event we just won.... realmad

Glad you recovered Tom. thumb

I save my dumbest mistakes for my biggest tournaments....in my earlier post I described losing a fish that cost me winning the all American....8 years later I qualify for another all American, first day catch a good limit..... easily a top 5 bag on a tough fishery...pull up to the coliseum and start bagging my fish and discover I've got 6 fish in the livewell...entire catch gets disqualified.....I culled several times during the day and must have forgotten to throw a fish back once...

I’ve done that with plyers before, not during a tournament though! I don’t touch my phone during a tournament... the go pro is running though

Tom,

You administered a self-spanking on the video, self-deprecating in your commentary, willing to share your "oops!" with the world via video.

No equivalent of wrapping a golf driver around a tree trunk, snapping a bat over your knee.

All is well in the world and you put fishing into its proper perspective!

I’ve done it several times. I started with 8 cull tags. I’m down to 4. But, I’m a dumb [censored]. Lol. I don’t learn lessons easily.

,

It was a cold and windy day on the North End of Palestine, I started to hope out of the boat and build a fire on the bank until my partner finished, lol.

We had 17+ lbs at the Media Championship at the Red River a few years back and at around 1:00 my trolling motor batteries had nothing left, so we decided to go ahead and weigh our sack. Went to the weighin and got my weigh slip and proceeded to take off to the casino. Next morning we went to see where we stood and we were in last place with a 0.00. I talked to David Baummen (however you spell it) and he investigated it and said we didn't check in when we got to the weighin. There wasn't anybody on the bank to check us in but even with the weigh slip in my hand he wouldn't do anything. Pretty much screwed our weekend as we would have been in top 5 from what I remembered.

I had pretty much exactly the same thing happen in a team tournament, fishing with my brother, except we stuck around waiting to get second place and big bass money. We were the very first to weigh in, well before our check in time, but no one to check in with. We made donkeys out of ourselves, bad enough they called the sheriff on us lol.

terrible decision on Media bass's part.....not only was it good to release the fish early but is it in the rules that you have to find a check in person prior to weighing your fish in...whoever weighed your fish should have advised if so.....
several years ago media bass was a growing tourney trail in this area and when they had the regional here on Seminole, the owner came riding into town the night before and announced the a-rig would not be permitted....many fishermen had been using it throughout the year and practicing for this tournament...numerous fishermen including his tournament director tried to talk the owner out of changing the rule the night before and he wouldn't budge ....
next year nobody fished his trail....
