Need a New Carolina Rig Rod - 02/01/20 07:33 AM

I broke my carolina rig rod, and I need to replace it. Can anyone recommend a good replacement rod for around $125 or so? I prefer a 7' 6" rod. Thanks

I like the Bass Pro Jonny Morris CarbonLite rods. We have been using them for years and have several.

Call Dobyns Rods. They are selling their new Kaden line for $100 + $20 shipping. These rods will retail for $200/ea once officially launched to the market. They have a 7’4” 5 power model that should do you well

I also like a Dobyns Fury but also have a Powell Inferno I use more for c-rigging that I like. $109 at Tackle Warehouse.

I use Dobyns rods as well for my C-rig but I prefer the 4 power.
I use the 784 Extreme and the 734 Sierra. I use my 735 Extreme for 1/2oz football head jigs and 1/2 oz shaky heads.

Couldn't find any info on their website but googled it and yeah the Kaden line is named after his grandson and is being released for testing now. They have 2 models for crigs that might interest you. 7'1" Heavy and a 7'1" mag heavy.

I've got a 7'6 Abu that I won, it's like $100 at academy. Great crig rod actually.

I use an Abu Veritas 7’6” MH and it works good. Now I don’t C-Rig much but I’m really picky about a rod being comfortable during the cast and this one works well for a $100 rod.

I use one that is a little above your pay range. The Dobyns Carolina rig rod, 8'ft rod with a 4 power setting. GREAT rod for the C0rig. I have recommanad it to a lot of people an most love it, too. Hope this helps. Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.

Sounds like I need to drive up to the new Dobyns store in Sulphur Springs. Twenty minute drive for me. Hope the Kadens are on sale.

I like the Falcon Low Rider Lizard Dragger, both I and II. Not sure if the new series has a Lizard Dragger but they are in your price range.

If you drive up and they have a returned (not sure why anyone would return one) Dobyns DC 804C that Thad mentioned on sale, I would be all over that. Thats the favorite rod I own

Unless your just dead-set on wasting $$$$$.....find a 7' med-heavy Berkley Lightning.
Under $50 and practically perfect for most C-rigging chores.
You're welcome.

Thad Rains

great choice, loads up well for long casts, great length to help sweep into the hookset, plenty of backbone to get them up and to the boat. I have mine paired with the lews wide spool high speed reel with bigger handles. pretty sweet setup for someone that doesn't prefer to fish the old ball and chain!

Re: Need a New Carolina Rig Rod - 02/02/20 09:50 PM

Thad and Ronnie, is the 4 power stout enough? I’m not real familiar with Dobyns rods, although I bought two not long ago. I haven’t been able to use them much due to recent shoulder surgery.

I have had a rv on Fork for over 10 years now, and Carolina rig is by far my favorite and best way to catch fish there. I got to make up my mind and get set back up. Thanks for everybody’s suggestions.

Never mind, going with the 4.

Yes the 4 power loads up really well helping you make long casts and since it is a fast action the backbone comes into play quickly. I use the Dobyns 784 for 3/4 - 1 oz. rigs and the 734 for 1/2 oz and less. I tried the 745 Extreme for C-rigging once and I felt it was too stiff. The 4 power worked better for me.

I like the 784 so much that I have 3 of them. Many people also like it for throwing a flutter spoon.
The 804 wasn't out when I bought the 784, well all three of them.

Dobyns Champion 804c Carolina rig special. DX784 will work also. I prefer longer rods for fishing out deep.

Yes, for me at least 7’6”-7’8”. I fish some pretty deep water.

Another vote for the Dobyns 804C. It's perfect for the Carolina Rig. If you can pick up the one for $145, I would jump on it!

Re: Need a New Carolina Rig Rod - 02/03/20 08:43 PM

I recently purchased a DC764 and used it a couple of weeks ago, and I love the 4 power, and the length of this rod for C-Riggin....By far my favorite rod for this technique, and you can purchase them from AMAZON, that ships directly from American Legacy

Re: Need a New Carolina Rig Rod - 02/03/20 09:04 PM

The 4 power on the 804 is more stout than the shorter 734. I've had the same experiences as ezbassin. I liked my 784 Extreme for c-rigging so much that I bought a 2nd one. That's why I have the 804 up for sale along with a couple of other rods that aren't getting used enough. I also tried a 745 extreme at one point, but now I use it for dragging jigs and big worms instead of c-rigs.

Power Tackle LPC 970 or their older 7'6" 104.5 blank.

I tried my PG 104.5 for Carolina rigging once but I like the way the Dobyns 784 loads up while doing a lob cast better. I use the 104.5 for dragging 3/4 oz jigs or 3/4 oz. shaky heads.
Both are fantastic rods.

Buying a better rod than the Berkley Lightning rod is NOT a waste of money. I had one many years ago.
