Caught these 50' while fishing for Whitebass (Don Harper's the man!) - 01/26/20 01:40 PM
Although we didnt' target largemouth during this time of the year, I employ the teachings of Don Harper (breaking down lakes), to find whitebass in deep water pattern in the wintertime. Wow, is Don right on! What a pleasant surprise to catch 5 LMB including these 2 lunkers yesterday at Stillhouse Hollow. I mainly fish with spoons and soft plastics to catch whitebass, hybrids, and stripers; but Don's teachings and theory applies to most freshwater patterns, just at different depths.
We hit one area (#16 from the map), and got onto Whitebass steadily; finding plenty of bait and Whitebass. We caught over 100 keeper whitebass (only kept 6 for Clint's dinner), and these two (6 and 7 pounders, plus a 4 pounder) in 50’ of water. Steady action all morning on soft plastics, and went to spoons when they got more aggressive once the wind picked up. Of course, LVS was critical in figuring out what they were interested in as well as thumping them in.
My three personal best fish have been caught with Don's process, the last 2 trips yielding 7.5# and 7# in the winter time. Catching them this deep offshore is new to me...
