All you Mexico bass fishers, question - 12/23/19 07:50 PM

What is the best lake and the best time to go ? I went to Comedero several years ago, we caught quite a few, think we went in Jan/Feb. Anyway was maybe interested in going again this coming year, thanks for suggestions.

went with ron speed to both lakes we liked both lakes equally well which is why this year we are going to fish both lakes....I believe we went to picachos in late Feb./early march 5 years ago and fishing was great..
if you only had time to go to one lake,I'd choose either lake one year and go to the other lake the next year...

Not trying to be a Debbie Downer but with the US State Department issuing travel warnings to just about every part of Mexico, you guys are braver than me. Having had to travel internationally for work, I usually take those travel advisories with a little bit of "a grain of salt" because I think they are trying to practice a little CYA. But this year's and last years travel advisory there is a good bit of Mexico they won't even allow State department employees travel.

I don't think you can really make a wrong choice here. When we went to Salto last Feb we would run into a lot of guys just coming off trips at the airports and after talking to a lot of them Picachos seemed to be fishing best. We got hit with a cold front day before we arrived and it messed with the fish I think. We caught great numbers but nothing of size. I think the big bass for the week was just over 7lbs. We also had the nets to deal with.

I just got back from Comedero...we stayed with Ron Speed. The accommodations were OK...the food and service were excellent. The fishing was actually pretty tough due to the lake coming up 15 feet just days before we arrived. Caught a bunch of rats but larger fish were tough to come by for the entire camp. The fishing improved daily but it wasn't ever great. If I went back it would not be in December. I'm sure they are going to wreck them in Jan, Feb and March. We originally tried to book dates during those months but they fill up as much as a year out. Next year we are going to Picachos...or maybe a combo trip El Salto/Picachos.

I go every February and have done Huites,Comedero,Salto and Picachos. For numbers my best has been Picachos, size Salto.
Comedero last year, our group didn’t do well, but group after us whacked them. Going to Picachos this year. The Speed camps offer good lodging and excellent food. In and out of Mazatlan on direct flight is nice, and very good roads and safe rides to the lakes.

Still looking for a Boat Captain to follow me to Mexico's Lake Oviachic. I lost my best friend out of Odessa that provided that second boat for our road trips. Trips scheduled for Feb. 5th and March 5th.. Let me know of someone that can make the trips and might be interested in doing this on a yearly basis. Two or three trips done each Spring.

Sounds like a heck of a time, I am not looking to bring my boat to Mexico, just want to sit back and relax, have some margaritas and good food and not worry about anything but fishing.

What airlines do you fly going to Mazaltan? Are you going from DFW or Love Field?

I like the end of February. My best trips have been to Bacarrac with Terry Hollan. One trip I had nine over ten with a thirteen and two twelves. Anything with Billy Chapman Jr's name on it is first class. If you need any more sticks to go on the trip, let me know. I'm about ready.

if you want bigs, go to Baccarac. My Dad and I had a trip in late Oct.

1 over 11#
2 over 10#
9 over 9#

mostly big jigs and some swimbait action.
