Broken Bow Tips

We got a cabin there for Thanksgiving this week. Decided I’m going to take the boat for Friday while the ladies go Black Friday shopping.

Never been before so looking for help that might bring successful results.

I will preface this by saying I have fished BB about 15 times, but only once in late fall and I am fuzzy on what I did or how I did. I would start by seeing if you could get bit on some shad type baits, like a finesse type swim jig or smaller tight wobble med diving crank in the backs of coves (both shad or crawfish colored cranks). A 3/8oz jig head with a little 4 inch grub type bait slow rolled can be good there as well. Would try and t-rigged chigger craw on some steeper banks that go from 4ft to 10ft next if that above doesnt get you bit. If the water temps are still around 60, a clear colored walking bait topwater might still get you bit, but guessing water is mid-50s now. If water temps are lower 50s, you probably need to find some steeper rock edges / bluff walls and drag a 3.8 shakey head around. I prefer fishing the northern third of the lake as the creek arms up there are large and kind of have it all, and they seem to be loaded with bait more consistently, but just my personal preference.

I have been told the bass are on the points, small jigs, shakey heads, and drop shots will all get you bit. This was two weeks ago, I will call a guy I know and see if he has been, if he knows anything else i will shoot you a pm.

If you have time run north into the river, you will probably find warmer water and maybe some schooling action. Usually October early November can be incredible. Fish the big river bends north side of the lake where it makes a S....Fish those points. Hope you get on them! If not it’s still an awesome lake to cruise.

Is there anything I need to be cautious about running the lake?

Depending on water level, there are a lot of rock islands that could be at or near the water line. Ask a local.

giant rock island as you exit the marina cove. I would tend to say with current water level you should see it easily. Don't cut between islands unless you are dead in between and be very careful if you go up north. There are some stump fields that you won't see until you are in the middle of them. Most of the lake is one big drop off, but some points are somewhat shallow nonetheless, with TIMBER!! We are headed up there today, but no boat on this trip. I've fished the lake many times and typically the best numbers I've found were off points with a drop shot in 10-15' of water, and with jerk baits off points and right along drops. I think you'll find if you don't catch too many you'll be in such awe of the lake you won't care too much. I am an Okie, but my UNBIASED opinion is that it's the prettiest lake within 500 miles or more of DFW. BOOMER!

You might also try for some of the trout below the dam. Great time of year for that. I've only fished Broken Bow during the spring, so not much help for fall fishing.

Oh yeah, Grateful Head pizza is a must.

Well not a very good day for fishing but I was hell bent on going. Took my father-in-law with me and spent more time fixing his bird nests than fishing. It’s ok though, did pull up to a point and catch a smallie and a little large mouth on a jerkbait. Rained most of the time butt when the thunder started that’s when we called it quits. Was pretty foggy so couldn’t really see the beauty of the lake all too well. What we did see looked amazing and I will be back.

Now the pizza, went for lunch and there was an hour long wait. Decided to go next door to the Blue Rooster and it was ok. Home cooked food that really seemed like it was something me or my wife made. Called in takeout to Greatful Head for dinner, this was worth it. Everyone agreed the pizza was spot on and worth the wait.

Only issue I had with the pizza was it was kind of expensive.

Grateful head has the worst wings I've ever had. Been back several times
And my wife refuses to go there.

I caught some fish from the bank at the end of the eagle drive day use area.
One was a 3 + smallie. If you're on a boat wouldn't take long to swing
by and fish it next time.
