2014-2018 GM Owners (Safety Issue!)

2014-2018 GM Owners (Safety Issue!) - 11/03/19 01:00 PM

I've got a 2017 Silverado. While launching my boat yesterday my brakes almost quit working and I nearly rolled back into the lake. I came home and did some googling and found out this is happening to a bunch of people and there is a recall on the vacuum pump system that assists braking at low speeds, particularly in reverse. It'll pucker your butt when you are rolling down a boat ramp and your brakes don't work!

If you have a 2014-2018 GM vehicle, go see your dealer!

Date: September 6, 2019
NHTSA Recall Number: 9V645Recall
Manufacturer Recall Number: N192268490

Summary:
General Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2014-2018 model year Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Silverado, Chevrolet Suburban, Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Sierra, and GMC Yukon vehicles. In some circumstances, these vehicle may have a condition in which the engine-mounted mechanical vacuum pump output may decrease over time, decreasing the amount of vacuum/power brake assist.

Wow, that would get your attention! Reminds me of launching the boat at Lake Castaic in Cali at the dam where the water was 300 feet deep. The lake was about 100' low when we were there. I recall driving down the ramp about a 1/4 mile to the water thinking I sure hope the brakes on this thing are good. It was spooky.

Thanks for the heads up Josh!

Yep, have had the same thing happen. I have a 2014 Silverado and plan on taking mine in next week for the recall.

Kind of scary when it happens!

I got a letter. Already had it done. Takes about 20 minutes once they get their hand on your truck. It is a computer issues and they uninstall and install a new program

I'm having a real hard time with this being a computer issue. I've launched my boat without issue a 100+ times in the last two years. Now all the sudden the breaks don't work when backing down a boat ramp? Clearly a part that was working is no longer working. So I'm supposed to take it in, let them change some computer code, then go see if my truck rolls into the lake this time?

Re: 2014-2018 GM Owners (Safety Issue!) - 11/04/19 03:00 PM

The recall has nothing to do with vacuum pump supply , updated ( special policy , not recall) N182202780-01 (oct 11 , 2019) for loss/low vacuum supply from pump
covers for 10 yrs/ 150,000 miles. replaces vacuum pump and belt. however due to strike no parts are available at this time.. they will be regular ordered and
notifies customer when they arrive, ( I know I have 20 plus back ordered) for existing cases..
If on second /third apply pedal gets hard or on extended apply , its a vacuum pump... hope this helps..

Thanks for the heads up! I never got a notice, but have the same truck you do. I can imagine that's a scary feeling.

Someone gets hurt and I bet they start mailing or calling owners about recalls like this after a settlement

Re: 2014-2018 GM Owners (Safety Issue!) - 11/06/19 04:06 AM

I had a 2015 LTZ Z71. I reported the problem to Chevrolet in early 2016 as it was happening on my truck going forward. Chevrolet and their dealers blew me off. My truck was totaled in October of 2017(not because of brakes). I received an email from attorney's wanting me to join a class action suit. I declined as I did not have a dog in the fight any longer. I can say, I will more than likely never own another GM product.

Got a 17 Sierra All Terrain. Not many issues love my truck. When you build 900k trucks there is a margin or error involved. Friends with F150’s have had three times the recalls and problems

Yep had this exact thing happen on my 17 Yukon Denali 4 weeks ago. Backing the boat down and it just slides and feels rough on the brake pedal. Service desk acted like I’ve never backed a boat down and said it can do that on a boat ramp 😂. Had to encourage them to have it looked at. All fixed now with new vacuum pump under warranty

Have a buddy with a 15 with a few and biz partner with a 18 and he’s had 4-5. My buddy with the 15 is getting rain inside his rear door. When it rains it sloshes around when he drives
