Drop / shakey head rod recommentatios

I am considering getting a new drop shot / shake head rod and have a few questions.

What drop shot rod do you recommend and why?
What about for shakey head?
Do you use one rod for both?

Is there a big difference between an expensive and a cheaper rod.

I use a Nrx SYR shakey head spinning rod for both techniques. (Loomis NRX Spin Rod Blue 6'10" Mag-Med 822S SYR)

I was always having bass be 10-20 feet from where I cast when fishing a shakey head with a worm until I went to this rod. The sensitivity is incredible, now I have to wait them out a little while they pick at it.

I use a Nrx 852 or 853 casting rod for both techniques if I want to use a bait caster.


The NRX drop shot rod is crazy flexy and clearly for open water only, it bows to the handle with a 13 incher, I have it but dont use it.

Shaky head, you need to set the hook pretty hard—I’d use a medium+ to medium heavy
Open hooked drop shot, you don’t and can get away with a lighter rod medium light to medium

I use two different rods for the reason above; and I hate retying an open hooked drop shot, so I have a dedicated rod for just that

Texas rigged drop shot=same rod as shaky head

Quality is a big plus especially with contact baits(sensitivity). If you want to use a bait caster(I do) there are plenty of decent less expensive choices but few better: http://dobynsrods.com/rod/dx-742c-sh/

I should clarify shakey head I usually fish is a 3/16 tungsten w a trick worm or ribbon tail 9-10 inch. Fish sniff it and are hooked, barely a flick of the wrist is needed. IF I throw a 5/8 or 3/4 7/O shakey head with say a smashtech big worm, I use my Nrx 894 as that does need a hook set for sure.

I use a Dobyns DX 702 spinning rod for dropshotting and a Dobyns DX 702 casting rod for up to 1/4 oz. Shakeyheads. For anything bigger on the Shakeyheads I use a NRX 853. Yes, you get what you pay for, I buy the best equipment I can afford.

Question for KO Bass. I see where you use a med/light spinning rod for Drop Shot and a med/light casting for shakey. Why not use the spinning rod for both? Are the actions different from a cast to a spinning rod?. Also, how does it compare to your NRX as far as quality and sensitivity?

I use a nrx 822 for the shakey head and drop shot and I'll use a glx 822 for a dropshot also seems to be a little softer both with sustain 3000

I use a Nanoace drop shot rod made by Majorcraft. I have two of them. Fun N Sun in Hurst is where I bought them. They are a 6ft 9in. baitcaster rod. Im not a fan of spinning tackle even though I have a few of them. For the shaky head I use a Dobyns Sierra 683, and a 684.

Power Tackle LPC 400.

You can have Judy and Tim make it in either spinning or casting. I tested the casting version for them all of last year on Fork. Great tip, very sensitive, and has a ton of power for a finesse rod.
