Game Wardens Cracking Down on Boat Thefts

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Marine Theft Investigation Unit recently conducted a saturation patrol of Galveston and Harris counties that resulted in the seizure of seven vessels and issuance of numerous citations. The patrol focused on licensed marine dealer inspections, dock checks, and boat ramp patrols. The special unit of Texas game wardens began ramping up efforts in January 2018 and since then has seized 104 vessels with a combined value of over $555,000. The unit’s investigations have resulted in 149 boat tax evasion cases, recovering more than $128,000 in revenue, and issuance of over 200 citations. While conducting the saturation patrol, the game wardens received overwhelming support from the general public for their efforts. With these results, it is clear that the Marine Theft Investigation Unit is an effective tool for assuring dealer compliance, preventing boat theft, tax and title fraud, and recovery of stolen vessels.

That's one reason I have adopted the policy of when I sell a boat, we go to the courthouse and complete the sale and all mandated paperwork.

So the state double triple quadruple dips and collects tax every time a vessel and a car are sold. Every time. Another tax. And doesnt matter if your friend gave you the car or if you made a fantastic deal or traded they charge the tax on the book value.

They going to start collecting tax on everything sold on Craigslist too? Private party sales of gear....

They already do collect taxes for stuff sold on Craigslist and on private party sales. When the new owner registers their boat. IF they register it.

It's how they fund the Gov't. The other states charge the same types of taxes on purchases but other than Florida, those states get stuck with a state income tax also. Just wait until they ramp up a unit that collects all of the unpaid taxes on items that people buy online without sales tax. Right now, legally you are suppose to claim those purchases and pay the taxes yourself, to the state if the business doesn't collect it. They all have been losing a ton of taxes and are just trying to figure out a way to track it efficiently.

Having lived in other states and knowing how they rape you, I have no complaints of taxes in Texas.

texas does not have a personal income tax so it generates funds in other ways they are going after the boat flippers an folks that lie about what the purchase price was with this new deal when you sell a used boat don't leave the title open or unsigned it will have a chance to bring you a headache later. if folks keep lying about what they give for boats an motors they will go to a system like the autos do .
