Plenty of rain down south this year. I'm think they're releasing toward the new Arbuckle reservoir in Wharton county. It was on the local news a few weeks ago and they mentioned it was ready to start taking water.

Today Travis is sitting at 666.60, and it's raining real well here in the Hill Country. The lake is up 11 feet in the past month. I live on Travis and the boat ramp is usable again. So I ain't complaining. Just sayin'...

The Llano River at Llano is again at flood stage today. That slug of floodwater will be passed thru LBJ and Marble Falls into Travis. How much more Travis will rise is TBD.

I am just curious. Did those rice farmers pay for Lake Travis to be built? Did the lake front home owners? Or, as a matter of fact, any other lake?

I suspect hydrologists, meterologists, and engineers have a great deal of input on this. The decision to let out water involves anylasis of historical , current events, and projections. Every lake in Texas is mangaged this way. As far a downstream uses, a river cannot be dammed and not consider contractual and historical needs of downstreamn users. One factor that is considered is the health of the saltwater bays. No one is stealing Travis water.

The "rice farmers" struck their deal with the LCRA back in the 1940's when Travis was a relatively new lake, and they negotiated a very low price for a set amount of acre-feet per year. But Austin was about 100,000 people back then and relatively few folks lived on the lake. The Highland Lakes were mostly for flood control, electricity production, and agriculture. Not so much anymore.

Re: Lake Travis...why??? - 10/16/18 03:41 AM

The problem with the rice theory is that rice is harvested in Sept/Oct. it seems a little counter intuitive that they would flood the fields now since that occurs after it’s planted in the spring. I think.

Travis expected to hit 675' later today and that's from rain that's already hit the ground - doesn't count what's coming the rest of the week. Could be full by tomorrow.

Scratch that forecast. We have something extraordinary going on today. Llano river flowing 285k cfs - LBJ 10ft over bank - boats going over Starke dam - Lake Travis up over 4ft since midnight. It will be full, tomorrow .

Re: Lake Travis...why??? - 10/16/18 01:11 PM

Extensive water level changes can be very frustrating. Those years between 2013 and 2015 when folks stopped stopped going to Falcon we’re interesting. There were trips in there where I didn’t catch a keeper, but I kept at it and have found a lot of spots I never would’ve found if the water didn’t fluctuate. After 9 years of owning places on Falcon, I’ve come to th conclusion that fluctuating water levels will make you a better fisherman. You constantly have to find new stuff, so you are always looking around for the next spot.

Re: Lake Travis...why??? - 10/16/18 04:09 PM

Lot's of reasons for the water release on the Highland Lakes. Google blue sucker fish. Bass fishing and jet skiing not high on the list. I personally don't have a problem with it. One of the worst droughts in a long, long time a few years ago and those lakes were in no danger of going dry. People were just mad because they couldn't launch their boat and water their lawn. Hopefully the new reservoir down South will alleviate some of this.

Re: Lake Travis...why??? - 10/16/18 04:14 PM

Forecast has changed - LCRA is opening at least one gate at Mansfield at noon. Level is expected to rise above 681 into the flood pool. Insane amount of water coming down from LBJ.

Re: Lake Travis...why??? - 10/16/18 04:36 PM

This from J.R., over at AustinBassFishing.com:

Llano is cresting at the second highest level in recorded history at 31 feet, with them releasing at 275,260 cfs in Kingsland right now and the Pedernales over 20k. This should fill Travis all the way up, maybe even over full pool a little.

Travis came up two feet in the last two hours. Now at 673.42 and rising.

Travis came up 10 feet in 12 hours and is 15 feet below full pool and they are expecting it to be full within 24 hours. This is according to the report on KXAN just moments ago.

Mansfield Dam spillway is at 714 ft. Flood waters have never to date gone over the Mansfield spillway.

Currently the plan is for 4 floodgates to be opened by this evening. Note that Mansfield Dam has a total of
24 floodgates that could be opened if needed.

Which could flood out many, many million-plus dollar homes on Lake Austin that are built on lots that rely on LA being a constant-level lake.

Of course, these are the folks who wanted and paid for the 50K grass carp that destroyed the underwater environment of Lake Austin and will now take years to rebuild once the carp are gone. So what goes around, comes around... in a way, possibly.

Re: Lake Travis...why??? - 10/17/18 11:21 AM

696' @ 6am.

Flood operations are underway at all of the dams along the Highland Lakes – Buchanan, Inks, Wirtz, Starcke, Travis and Tom Miller. Flooding rains and historic inflows into the lakes this week are causing fast, high flows throughout the Highland Lakes. Anyone nearby should be extremely careful.

LCRA opened four floodgates at Buchanan Dam beginning at 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 16, at the rate of one an hour for four hours. Two of the floodgates are in the 14-gate section and two are in the16-gate section.

Lake Buchanan is forecast to rise to 1,018 to 1,020 feet msl and then be gradually drawn by flood releases to 1,018 feet msl over the following day or two.

Because of the dangerous conditions on the lakes, LCRA has closed lakes Buchanan, Inks, LBJ, Marble Falls and Travis until further notice.

LCRA began opening floodgates at Mansfield and Tom Miller dams at noon on Oct. 16. One floodgate was opened at noon, a second floodgate was opened at 2 p.m., a third floodgate was opened at 4 p.m. and a fourth floodgate was opened at 7p.m. LCRA is making controlled releases from the flood pool of Lake Travis to manage river levels downstream of Mansfield Dam. Lake Travis is expected to rise to 695 to 700 feet msl by mid-day Wednesday, October 17th and may continue to rise with additional rain. Operations at Mansfield Dam may change with additional rainfall or runoff, upstream or downstream of Mansfield Dam. LCRA Flood Status

The major flood in '91 would have flooded Austin to 45th Street if the dams weren't built. The Highland Lakes are doing the job they were built to do.

If lake Travis wouldn't have absorbed thirty feet of water yesterday I'm pretty sure a good portion of Austin would have been flooded. I'd say they did their job. Houses built on the banks of flood prone areas are just that.

Yep and now the liberals will say the flooding is due to climate change. They just go with whatever sounds best at the time.

How can it be climate change if it also happened 80 years ago?

Weather is cyclical.

Central Texas is the flash flood capital of the world. A 500 year event here means every 4-5 years.
So pack up your [censored] and move to the mohave, go now before the polls open.

If this isn't just a fun joke, I think you should take Beto and head on to Southern California. They don't have much rain out there but have plenty of whack jobs that you would get along with just fine.

Travis has caught 44.44ft in 30 days. 65 mile long lake. Pretty crazy

Re: Lake Travis...why??? - 10/18/18 04:05 PM

I've lived on Travis for the past two years. When we started building our home in 2015 the lake was 62 feet low. So in two years this lake has come up 82 feet. I know I started this post c0mplaining about them releasing water when we were still down 14 feet. Obviously (as a few have pointed out) that was an error on my part. But also obviously who ever dreamed we would have rains like we've had, in the "right spot" to do what has happened? I have friends out on LBJ who have had some pretty devasting damage. While I am happy to see Lake Travis in all it's glory. I would go back to 14 feet low in a heartbeat if it prevented the floodin. Praying for all those up and downstream that this thing settles out quickly and that the upcoming rains are minimal.

For the rear end who hates out state. I see you live in S.A. Swim back home where you came from esse! Or go get you some of those fires out in Cali. Either way...GET OUT!

GOD BLESS TEXAS...VOTE RED.

From LCRA's website
Quote:
Four floodgates remain open at Mansfield Dam. LCRA will NOT need to open additional floodgates at Mansfield Dam today. It is still possible we will need to open up to four additional floodgates over the next few days. Please check this page often for updates.

From David Paul KHOU Facebook
Quote:
Mansfield Dam is planning to open all 8 floodgates to release water out of Lake Travis. This has never happened before. This means that property along Lake Austin (near Austin, TX) will flood. The dam at Lake Austin will also be opened up to flow rates that will send enough water down the Colorado River to cause moderate flooding at #Bastrop #LaGrange #Columbus and #Wharton. IF you live along the Colorado River be prepared to take action and stay close to the forecast

Quote:
Officials said Wednesday afternoon that in the next 24 hours, a total of eight floodgates could open at Mansfield Dam at Lake Travis. That would break a record set in 1957.

Four floodgates are currently open at Mansfield Dam on Lake Travis and officials said Wednesday afternoon they expect that four more are likely to open within the next 24 hours. The Lower Colorado River Authority said they encourage everyone to take immediate action to protect people and property on Lake Travis, on Lake Austin, on Lady Bird Lake and further downstream.

The most floodgates ever opened on Mansfield Dam was six in 1957. Five were opened in 1991. Mansfield Dam has 24 floodgates total.

"This is an historic flood," LCRA said Wednesday.

In the past week, LCRA said Lake Travis has captured more water than the City of Austin uses in four years.

When asked if people should evacuate their Lake Austin homes, LCRA said they should "take precautions."

According to KVUE meteorologists, Lake Travis is 134 percent full at nearly 699 feet. The maximum height Lake Travis can reach is 714 feet before the water goes over the Mansfield Dam spillway. The closest Lake Travis has been to the maximum height was in 1991 when it reached 710 feet. The water has never in recorded history reached 714 feet. KVUE meteorologist Erika Lopez said the lake began rising rapidly due to filtering of floodwaters from the Llano River. Floodgate operations at Mansfield Dam have the potential to change with more rain in the forecast for the Austin-area, Chief Meteorologist Albert Ramon said.

Sometime after 6 a.m. Tuesday, the Llano River crested at 39.9 feet: more than 10 feet above the flood stage. That's the highest height the river has been since 1997 and is the second highest crest in recorded history. The highest crest for the Llano River was in 1935 at 41.5 feet.

Such a weird comment.

Something tells me you wouldn't be missed much around here, so why not look for bluer pastures? From the looks of it, there'd be a lot of volunteers to help you pack and make your transition quick and seamless.

Been to Austin lately? It is a weird city that is full of liberals. Wouldn't hurt my feelings if the entire town packed up and left Texas.

I hate Austin. Full of crazies. Used to like the bbq but it's not worth it anymore. Salt Lick isnt what it used to be in Round Rock and I'm not standing in the line at Franklin's. So I avoid Austin

Craziest "drawn out" weather event I have EVER witnessed. Went to actually see the release of water behind Mansfield dam yesterday (Lake Travis's dam) and was told by a reporter there that with only 4 gates open they are releasing 2 millions gallons...PER MINUTE! Let that sink in for a few seconds.

Now imagine what toledo released with 11 or 14 gates open. How much water can go thru a lake is crazy when the rain hits the watershed right. Mother nature is amazing and dangerous at the same time

Lbj was releasing about 350,000 cfs at it's peak. Toledo peaked about 206,000 cfs. That's how Travis caught 47ft in the past 30 days.

In the spring of 2015 Richland Chambers had 24 gates open. That was a lot of water.

Here's a drone video of Briarcliff TX, where I reside, showing the marina area out to the mouth of Cat Cove. Across the lake is Lago Vista. This is what the lake looks like at 704.3 msl, 23 feet over full pool.

Guess I don't understand their way of thinking. Instead of having 4 gates open and waiting several days to open 4 more for a total of 8, why didn't they open 2 more for a total of 6 several days ago to lower the lake and minimize flooding?

If they release it faster then the lakes downstream can release then those areas get flooded as well.

Which is Lake Austin, already full and only 1600 acres, and then Lady Bird Lake, which is downtown Austin. Flooding downtown Austin would be a very bad thing.

Lake Travis was built for flood control downstream which is exactly what they are doing.

Re: Lake Travis...why??? - 10/21/18 02:03 AM

Being a fisherman and always looking at lake/river levels I saw all this rain happening 2 weeks ago and wondered where it was gonna go and saw it was the llano river, that made me think all this is headed for LBJ and will end up in Travis. I wonder if they are gonna move water now so when it gets there stuff wont be so bad considering all this water was at historical high levels.

Nope, they waited to the last min!

50 foot change in the water level for Travis in about a month is amazing.

Re: Lake Travis...why??? - 10/22/18 08:09 PM

The problem that the LCRA has is that no matter what, someone will complain. If they had released water ahead of all the weather it wouldn't have been enough to make a big difference. Also, had they pre-emptively released, and then the rain not have been very substantial, people would have complained. Its almost like being a tournament director and deciding whether or not to delay a start due to bad weather.

They had almost 2 weeks worth of knowing what was on the way with all the flow charts and engineers that were in the Junction/llano area when all this began.

Re: Lake Travis...why??? - 10/23/18 11:22 AM

I'm betting they thought travis was so low that it could hold whatever rain they got. 50ft is a whole lot of water. Nobody knew that much rain would drop and if they let it go early and didnt get enough to do anything everybody would be complaining about how they mismanage the water anyway.
