Falcon Lake

Falcon Lake - 02/27/18 02:06 PM

We just spent 10 fabulous days on Falcon!
We caught lots of fish with the biggest going 9.30. Not the monsters we had hoped for but we caught a lot of fish.
Before the cold snap we were doing best in Mexico fishing 3 foot of less.
I can't say enough good things about the Falcon Heights Motel!
It's old but VERY clean, super nice people and a cooking area that is awesome! Come in at night and cook steak, chicken, fish or whatever you please and enjoy fellowship with others. It was 1/2 of the trip. Thanks to Carlos, his wife, his mother-in-law and Wedo! His hot sauce is awesome!
Be sure to put in special requests if you want Menudo, beans and rice, etc that are authentic, home cooked.

Awesome that you had a good, safe trip. Hmmm, is the fishing that much better that its worth the risk on the Mexico side? I'm intrigued.

I’m intrigued, what is this risk you speak of?

me too .... what "risk" ?

I felt more in danger walking from the Horseshoe Casino to my hotel in Shreveport this past Saturday night than any "risk" I have ever felt fishing the Mexico side of Falcon Lake.

Been fishing Falcon on Mex side for 10 years, maybe crazy but no fear.

Well known fact that certain drug cartels use that lake to transport their goods across the border.
Majority of the people fishing over there never have any issues but there have been several instances that you would not want to happen to you. Be smart about where you fish and keep other boats that are fishing in your sight.

Oh brother. They transport all over the USA. Big deal.

I'm glad you all had a blast. I fished on the 22nd during the late afternoon with falcon guide Jonatan and did really good even with the cold front and light rain. I agree with you, Mexican side is fishing good.

Re: Falcon Lake - 02/27/18 09:36 PM

I’m 3 hours from Zapata now. my second trip there.

I’ll be parking In a empty lot in Zapata tonight. After dark most of the traffic is police and border patrol.

Rv life!

Re: Falcon Lake - 02/27/18 10:04 PM

The "risk" would be simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time and I have seen suspect activity there before, but I always see law enforcenment as well. So far, I have had zero incidents on the USA side and I have been often. So if the risk is not as bad as I thought on the Mexico side, as you all say and since I am also hearing that it is worth venturing to the Mexico side for fishing...my next question is how much is the Mexico fishing license and where do I get one (w/o going into Mexico) Lol.

...Mexico fishing is not BETTER THAN the US side ...... we all just like that side because it's Mexico & we like to say we fished Mexico
the fishing is just as good on the US side and you never have to go across the border line.
Now with that being said,,,,the RISK is not that great (IMHO),,,,,, jus like they said, get off the water before dark ...... but that goes for the USA side as well. At dark thirty you want to be at your room or at a restaurant eating dinner and telling stories.

Get your Mexico license at Falcon Tackle ..... James will take care of you there. $46.40 for an annual .... that was the rate Feb 2017.
not sure if the 2018 rate has gone up. I will be calling James tomorrow to get mine again

Re: Falcon Lake - 02/28/18 12:27 AM

It's nice to have the Mexican license. Some trips I fish mostly Mexican water, other trips my best spots end up on the Texas side.

It's great to have the whole lake open to you.
Posted By: stapler101

Re: Falcon Lake - 02/28/18 12:38 AM

60 for the license.
We fished hard on the us side. We found warmer water and a much better concentration of fish on the Mexico side.
As for being able to say I fished Mexico, Hell yes!

Stapler you would have seen us there at Carlos's place then. We were the crazy guys with the kayaks LOL.

Heck we probably even talked and didn't realize it. Anyway yeah the fishing was okay before the front and picked up after it but for two days there it kind of sucked.

Yep Dan, were straight across from you in the white Triton with power poles. Me and my 2 sons sure got hit with the cold spell but Friday, when bites were slooooow my son got a 9.30, lost one in the dip net that big or bigger and had another close to 5.
All in Mexico. We could not get bit in US.

Re: Falcon Lake - 02/28/18 02:52 AM

Falcon tackle will mail you your license. They can date it to start any day you want. 60 for annual, I think 40 for week

Re: Falcon Lake - 02/28/18 04:28 PM

Thanks for the input guys. I was intrigued to go over there, cause the USA side gets a pounding from fishing pressure and the Bass are not easy to catch most days. So I have discussed this with a few of my fishing buddies and they are not buying the whole go to the Mexico side for a fish or two. These are Rio Grande Valley locals I'm talking to, we live down here and hear things that are not main stream media about Falcon. Well I'm not too excited to go by myself, so for now, more fish for you "crazy" guys that go there. Lol.

I meant Falcon Lake Tackle up above for the license. I'm a very senior citizen and my typing fingers can't keep up with the slowing brain action. I was down there, Falcon, not Fork, last week and for most it was some tough fishing. Many I talked with were only catching 1 or 2 fish a day. Some none. The area has not had stable weather or temperatures for a while so everything is a bit in a jumble. 13# and few oz. won a one day tournament or was leading a 2 day tournament, don't remember which. 9# was the biggest I heard of being caught and was the only fish for this 1 guy in a tournament. Not fishing any tournaments 3 of us lucked out on Mon. w/ 15 w/ a 6#+ as large fish for the day, Tues. again 3 of us w/ 20 no size, Wed. again w/ 3 of us w/ 50 & of those 40 were from one small point, no size, Thurs. 2 of us had 15 w/ a 7# 7oz. as largest fish of the trip, 2 of us on Fri. w/ 4 fish no size, 2 of us on Sat. had 2 fish no size. Glad we were leaving on Sun what w/ the way the fish catching was dropping off for us. I'd say most all the fish we caught were 6' or shallower and on US side. Lots of tilapia in the shallows. Take your bow fishing gear.

Re: Falcon Lake - 03/01/18 09:51 PM

....$60 .... DANG
Them Messycins went up again..... ???
I guess they are trying to get some $$$$ to pay for that wall
or maybe to buy more NETS to keep us Americans out of the Mexico waters.
They sneak across and we pay the $$$ to go into Mexico ....... what's up with that ?
Catch a Mexican on the USA side without a Visa and we give them food, money and a City to call their own
Catch an American on the Mexico side of Falcon without a fishing license and they'll take your boat and haul you off to jail.

Re: Falcon Lake - 03/02/18 06:28 AM

Just returned from my first trip to Falcon, 2/21-2/26. Weather sucked! Cold front, lots of rain. Fishing was terrible. Caught 3-5 per day 7am- 7pm each day, nothing good, best day was Monday in the rain, caught 9 with a 6lber. So upsetting, was really looking forward to some decent weather and fishing. On a positive note met a couple great guys who live there and learned the lake for my next trip down!

I am headed down there in a week...these terrible reports are surprising. Sounds like Falcon is really off right now, not normal for this great lake.

This winter has been a big influence down here. Not fishing like normal. Haven’t seen a full week of sunny days for awhile now.

That's how much James (assuming you got it at FLT) pays Mexico for the licenses, not how much you paid for it. Then he has shipping costs from California and costs associated with a licensing procedure. FLT has to buy them in bulk ahead of time and he claims to make no money on them. I've been going to FLT for the almost 10 years that James and Tom have had the place and have no reason to think that they're being dishonest about it...

I'll let him elaborate (if he sees this post) and not put words in his mouth...

If it makes you feel any better, my bass club out of San Antonio had 12 people out of 21 blank on Sunday.

Saturday was better, but we were also mostly fishing the south end, which has been the better end for several months now. Sunday we weighed in at county ramp, so people were closer to there.

That's what some people don't realize about that lake... some people come on here and ask sh!t like, "is it cheating if you go to Falcon to catch your first DD?" but that lake can kick your @$$ with the best of them...

Wow, I can't believe all these bad reports. I was down there 3 weekends in a row in February and I thought it was fishing pretty well, for me at least.. I mean, I know it's a little off but I wouldn't say it's fishing terrible. I'm going back here in a few weeks.

Are you guys fishing deep? Because I couldn't find any fish deep. The 10 pounder my dad caught was in 4 feet of water.

Also, we did 90% of our fishing on the North end. Everyone is fishing from Tigers down to the South end. The North end hasn't been getting a lot of attention.

Fished under 5 feet most of the day but did spend some time in 5-15. Three we caught were in about 5 feet. We fished south, sounds like that wasn't our best call.

Re: Falcon Lake - 03/02/18 10:00 PM

We have owned Falcon Lake Tackle for ten years this month. The cost of a Mexican fishing license has not gone up here in that time.

On your license it is stamped $46.40. Cost of the license in Mexico.

We get them from a distributor in San Diego, CA. Who steps on them some..

We send certified funds to them when we buy them in bulk.. And Fed Ex them both ways..

I never said we do not make a few bucks on Mexican licenses..

We don't make [censored] on Texas Licenses when all is said and done. I have surely said that.. Selling Texas licenses are surely not worth the hassle. But it is something that must be done if you own a tackle/outdoor store..

You can buy licenses direct from Mexico and if you google it you can find where easily.. But you may not like the procedure..

Feel free to e-mail me or call me if you have any questions.

P.S. We whacked the [censored] out of em today.. No monsters.. But a bunch of fish.. Twenty five or so from 8:30 till 1:00..

I think fishing is good..

Was down there Feb 13-16. Tougher than usual but had 2 25 fish days and a stinker with only 3-4. Big fish was 6 and change. Will be going back this summer. Not fishing like it normally does but this summer the big girls will be deep on rock and so will I.

If you want to pay 46.40 go over to Mexico and buy them. I am more than glad to pay a little more and not go through the hassle of buying them from Mexico.

Can’t believe people are complaining about the cost of a license now. Hmmm,.. you may need to raise your prices some. Most retails items have a much higher mark up than that. I think you may be charging enough when you factor in supply and demand. You go to Falcon... you want to fish Mexico... one store in town has Mexico licenses...
