Hating Micro-guides

Hating Micro-guides - 02/25/18 09:53 PM

I have a 7.5-foot BPS baitcasting rod that came with 10 micro-guides and a tip on a MH, fast tip blank. I’m sick of the tiny guides, and want to re-wrap it with “regular” ones, but don’t know how many guides to use. 10 seems too many to me. Any ideas?

Unless you really like that Rod it would be money well spent to sell it and buy a different rod without the micro guides. I have wrapped a few rods in my day and it is a time-consuming thing. If you have a professional do it they charge about $15-$20 per guide.

Ken, I definitely understand where you're coming from. wrapping rods can be a complete pain in the patoot. However, when I lived in Washington many years ago, I wrapped all of my own rods, and became pretty good at it - even sold a few. Not much else to do up in those parts when all the lakes are ice-covered,other than make, repair, and clean your tackle.

10 doesn't sound like to many to me on 7'-6" rod.

This chart may help you decide.

Understood. I will admit there is a lot of satisfaction to wrapping your own once you are finished. My eyeballs are not as good as they used to be!

Just remember you will not be putting all double footed a frames back in the same place there will be some fly guides. And when you remove a guide the finish on the rod is gone, that's why you put a guide back in the same place.

Just run double foot to start and go down to single foot on the. Last couple. Some of the big rod builders do that too. That way you can still use ten. It will not hurt anything.

I also agree on micros. Had one rod with micros. Hated it, stripped it, and re did the guides myself.

Not sure why y'all hate the micro guides. I have a couple Duckett Ice rods with micro guides and I like em. One is a 7' 11" cranking rod for big deepdivers and the other is a 7' MH worm/jig rod. The first one I bought I thought the extra guides and their small size would inhibit my casting distance but I can launch a 6XD or DD22 with it.

Are y'all using braid to mono or braid to fluoro trying to get a knot to got thru them?

If there using braid to flo just use a Alberto knot it will go right through the guides. Learn to respect your rods don’t step on them and use rod socks get Reid of those tubes in your rod box. I repair a lot of rods for people and they just destroy them it’s ashame.

Should be a law against making a rod without the stainless recoil guides hammer

Go to Mud Hole and look at the price of recoil guides and you might change your mind.

I have some kistler rods with what they call macro guides just a little bigger than micro guides but easier to deal with ,I like them much better than the few rods I have with micro guides.

If you want smaller guides but not micro just switch them to a #5 guide. I had Kevin (Shamrock) redo a couple of Falcon Caras and that is what we went with. Has worked out great. As far as the number of guides I can't help with that. I think Mud Hole might have some guidelines on their site or maybe contact Kevin Smith (goes by KVS on here) and see if he can give you some help with that question.

They're about as needed as flourocarbon line and tungsten weights.
