Bass diet into and then out of the spawn?

Bass diet into and then out of the spawn? - 01/30/18 12:52 AM

I finally witnessed fall fishing with Shad moving in shallow and good sized bass chasing but as we are moving into prespawn what is the primary diet? Still Shad or transition to crawfish? And does that stay the same through post spawn? Talking DFW area lakes if that matters much?

Shad, bream, crawfish. In that order, imo. Though the iodine in craws is thought to be beneficial to brooding females.

I think it's shad, crawfish, and then bream. Big shad and a red trap are better prespawn baits and the bream come in when the spawning starts

Gizzard shad imo are utilized the most if available. They tend to get shallow with the bass. Crawfish a close second

Yeah kinda depends on the available forage.
I’m not sure how much it changes based on the timing though. Good question.
Of course with those times the eating seems to be more frequent due to obvious biological reasons.

Bass will eat anything. My dad caught a bass in Mexico that had a black bird in his mouth. Small ducks have been eaten also. They will even eat each other. Fresh water sharks are what they really are, lol.
