Purtis Creek has the grass came back yet

Purtis Creek has the grass came back yet - 01/26/18 01:46 PM

Purtis Creek if you caught a grass carp you were to go to the bank and gut it immediately. Has this been lifted or still in effect? Purtis Creek had tons of grass until they put in those grass carp , the last time I was there they had fenced off small areas that had grass and the carp would bash into the panels trying to get to it. Scared the [censored] out of me a couple of times being right next to fence when they bash into it wink
Thanks for any reply's

Went back last year to check on any progress, and it was still a sad sight.

Vegetation struggling in little puny pens and grass carp dorsal fins swishing around in coves.

getting rid of the grass on Purtis will go down as one of the dumbest moves by the TPW did they ever say why the did it?

The explanation I've heard was that campers that were bank fishing from the campsites complained they couldn't cast past the grass.

Then there was the trifecta storm of
1. Way too many grass carp and an underestimation of their lifespan and reproductive potential
2. Flooding
3. LMB virus

I think there was some spraying and an issue with the levee/dam also around the same time.

My personal best was caught there right before they killed the grass north of the island in a little creek channel. Thought I'd try it again this last fall for the first time in many years. Man they ruined that lake!!

It’s not totally ruined, but definitely not what it used to be. That being said the last time I went was mid March 2015 and I caught a 9-14 and several others in the 2-4 pound range.

Sounds like they need to have a few bowfishing events out there.....

But the TPWD learned a valuable lesson! Just like they did on Conroe, Austin, etc., etc.

They did it because they want all of the hydrilla in Texas gone, thats why. They knew exactly what they were doing!

I fished it several times last summer, sort of like it. No, not much in the way of vegetation but it has quite a lot of timber on both sides of the creek running through it like a spine. If you like to toss Texas rigged worms, drop shots, finesse stuff, there are some bass to be caught. I've had a bit of luck tossing a Keitech shad bait but not as much as just heading in and fishing finesse.

If you are in a kayak, watch out for stumps just below the surface. Those will startle you if you paddle/pedal/drift into one.

Not Lake Fork, for sure, but a decent numbers lake, with the occasional big one pulled out.

I saw the biggest bass of my life bust a shad on the east bank one evening. That fish was easily in the 13lb -15lb class.
