SPOONBILL - ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO EAT THEM? - 04/14/08 10:53 PM

I tried spoonbill growing up - uhghggwaaa (translated - I liked the cats [censored] to get the taste out of my mouth)

I snagged a 40 lber and tried it again since I'm not a kid at home any more - shurly dad did something wrong - right?

NOPE - NASTY NASTY NASTY.

I cleaned them and cut off all the red meat. I soaked them for 3 days in salt / lemon water. I changed the water several times a day.

I seasoned them and grilled. They grilled up nice - anyway the looked good.

TASTED LIKE FISHY DIRT.

Does ANYONE know how to cook spoonbill so the don't taste like [censored]?

I got 39.5 pounds left. lol.

on second thought - anyone want any spoonbill? j/k.

best way to cook spoonbill....clean it, gut it, put all of it in a bucket with some water or blood, leave in direct sunlight for a few days. use as chum for cats or sharks.

I've had it fried before and thought it tasted reasonable!

The only thing a Spooney is good for is stomping the entire bird into the mud unseen so they don't count against your ttl bird count.

"General Prohibited Acts
It is a violation to:

Take, kill, or disturb sea turtles or sea turtle eggs;
Take, kill, or disturb any endangered or threatened species (like paddlefish, shovel-nosed sturgeon, smalltooth sawfish, and others);"........from the Texas Gerneral Fishing Rules web site.

Snagging spoonbills or paddlefish is illegal in Texas. I am sure the folks at TWPD would love to hear this fish story.

Spoonbill is a great tasting fish, if you clean it right. The first thing you have to do is cut around the tail and pull the spinal cord out. If you don't do that, it will ruin the meat. Then you have to cut all the red meat off. What you have left is some real white clean tasting meat. Some of the best tasting fish you will ever find. woot

"cut around the tail and pull the spinal cord out"

There is just.....something..........I don't know......
just something about this little detail that causes
me to have cold chills and takes away my appetite for
that succulent morsel of pure white meat that would
be the end result of the procedure! eeks

Maybe it is my "feminine" side trying to get into contact with
the "real" me.

Nahhhhhhhh....that's not it at all!! grin

Kansas requires the puchase of a spoonbill snagging license (12.50 for 6 tags).

Any further questions from grandpa75672 can be directed to
http://www.kdwp.state.ks.us - key word spoonbill.

Seth

I feel that anyone that snags spoonbill for ANYTHING other than sport is waisting thier time.

There used to be a lot of spoonbills in the Trinity River below the Lake Livingston Dam. I snagged one with a rattle trap one morning and couldn't reel it in against the current so a guy in a boat behind me netted it. We met up on the bank and the game warden and another man from TRA showed up almost immediately. The GW measured and weighed it (27 pounds), I asked if they were any good to eat and he said yes if you can afford the fine lol, we turned it loose.
