Smoking with pecan shells?

Smoking with pecan shells? - 12/13/22 02:51 AM

Has anybody tried this? I was thinking about smoking some chicken with the shells. I know there has to be some
places here in Ft Worth that you can pay to shell pecans for you. Want to get a couple pounds and give it a go. Anyone know where to go get some?

Thanks!

I`ve seen some BBQ places use them in their smokers. They use another wood as the main source and sprinkle pecan shells that have been soaking in water over the coals for more smoke flavor. Salt Lick BBQ does this.

Works great just make sure to get all the meat out of them, it is bitter when used for smoking.

Most definitely get the meat out the shell. Otherwise, whole pecans explode when set on fire. They'll Pop and will send ambers flying.

We use to burn piles of bad pecans. You could tell when a good one slipped by the sorting because they'd go off like a firecracker.

Pecan shells are awesome to use. They make a great smoke ring and a lot of flavor due to the oil in them.
