2001 merc efi is hesitating and will run on high rpms. Is it time for a new fuel filter?

Possibly. When was the last time it was changed? When was the last time that you replaced all the fuel lines and primer bulb?

With todays ethanol laced fuels, all these items become regular maintenance items. Fuel filter/separator annually. Fuel lines and primer bulb every 2 years, at a minimum.

Mine started doing that. I changed the motor mounted filter and added a racor between the bulb and tank. The fuel in the bowl of the stock filter looked kinda bad when I poured it in a clear glass, have not had it back out yet to see if it worked.

First sign of restricted fuel is surging. I would lean more towards old or bad fuel. We always see some problems when the fuel supply is changing from one season to another. You could have gotten a big dose of ethanol. Had a boat this time last year that the fuel tested 35%. Was doing the same hesitation and would finally get up on plane and run fair.

Injectors need cleaning, or plugs need changing....or both.
