If you don't know what you are doing.....

leave to someone who does know! I bought a 14' Monark jon boat and 10 hp motor to use in the river here. The guy I bought it from told me the motor needed a water pump and he had the new parts. Well, after getting it home and in the shop I find he tried to replace the pump himself. I have spent several hours putting the motor all back together so I can replace the pump. He couldn't figure out how to disconnect the shift rod so he unbolted the lower unit, and the extension gear case. He evidently gave up. The Honda four stroke is pretty easy to work on, simply disconnect the shift rod from the shift handle on the top front of the engine, remove bolts from propellor gear case and lower to get to the water pump. Should take 30 minutes to replace a water pump.

I've always agreed with the view that if you don't know what you're doing, do it very quickly so as few see you screwing up as necessary.

A man has to know his limitations.

Sounds a little like IT support.

My favorite IT error is the PICNIC error. Problem in chair not in computer.

I had a carbed Merc 175 for 31 years and it was simple and easy to work on. That does not mean that an idiot could not screw something up. Now that I have a 2007 Optimax Tommy will see me for service and not just parts.

This is something that always makes me laugh when the guy with the boat that wont idle or wont go over x rpm etc. that doesn't even change his own oil knows for a fact that its not the carbs because they just rebuilt them... LOL

I got a 1957 7.5 evinrude years ago from a pretty mechanically inclined individual. I traded him the factory radio out of my truck for it (his same model quit working and I had replaced mine with a CD player and had no use for it)

He had drilled a hole in the air silencer so he could squirt a shot of starting fluid into the carb to start it easier. I cleaned the carb and never had a problem with it.
