Mercury XRi Lower Unit Leak

Mercury XRi Lower Unit Leak - 06/24/17 12:06 AM

1995 Mercury XRi 200HP.
Just replaced the prop shaft seal after I noticed it was leaking from lots of braid behind the prop.
Did that 2 weeks ago, refilled with fresh gear lube, been on the lake 2 full days and it ran great, went into gear fine. No issues there.
Parked the boat for about 10 days and the lower unit started leaking out of a little hole (see pic, top right hole)
I checked the fluid for water, it's not milky, or runny like it's got water in it.
i have no clue what the holes for, or why it's leaking gear oil out of it.
It's leaking about a 7 inch diameter circle of fluid. Is this over flow?

not familiar with the merc but if that's a weep hole from the top inside of the l/u, it could mean the shift shaft or drive shaft seal is leaking, it may need a pressure test, but just a guess

Yep...need to have the LU pressure tested. cheap insurance.

After changing LU fluid, I always take it for a short run to heat up the LU, stick it back on the trailer, and crack the top screw to release pressure and bleed any excess fluid off.

Sounds like you might have overfilled the lower.

Okay, so...
Pulled the lower unit lastnight, replaced the shift shaft bushing, re-installed the LU, took to the lake to run it around and my boat is stuck in neutral. Won't go into gear.

You missed the shift shaft. Drop lower down just enough to get the top part of the shift shaft on to the top of the lowers shift shaft. Lower and control in neutral.
