I completed my boat floor project today. I've got a DuraCraft 1660SV
that I put a plywood floor in when it was new. I coated it with a
product called Durabak. It held up "OK" for a couple of years, but
started fading, chalking, peeling and generally looking like hell.
I stripped the Durabak down and then laminated a sheet of 14 gauge
5052 aluminum on top of the plywood. I primed the aluminum with
an automotive grade epoxy primer called MagnaPoxy. Then I applied
a "bed liner" product called Monstaliner. I chose this product for a number
of reasons. It's a ceramic reinforced aliphatic urethane. That's longhand
for "tough as all hell and UV permanent". I also like the fact that this
product does not use rubber crumb to give texture and non-slip to the
surface. This was one area that the Durabak failed on. The crumb would
shear under stiff abrasion. This product achieves an excellent texture just
by applying with an open foam roller. Very easy to use and I'm really
happy about the results so far. I had originally planned to shoot this floor
with Line-X but when I found out about this product I decided to use it.
Now I've got to wait 7 days for cure out and then I'm going to give this
floor the catfish slime test !
One of the things I'm excited about with Monstaliner is the surface as compared
to what I had before. This looks like it will be much easier to keep clean. i never
did get the Durabak really clean ever. It was bad about holding on to dirt and
stain. The boys on the Jeep forums say that their tubs wash out really easy after
they mud them up.
