mercury pro xs idle issue - 06/15/10 12:48 AM

I have a 2007 Mercury 225 Pro XS and it has an Idle issue....when I put it in gear it feels and sounds(spits, sputters and misses)like it is going to die from 900-1400 rpms, once I am above 1400 it seems fine. The motor has 65hrs on it and I'm not sure what I need to do. I am 2 hrs from a dealer and will reair ir myself if I can find the problem. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

thanks!

You may have a fouled spark plug due to the temp of the motor not gettingwarm enough. Sometimes you can get wood or trash in the thermostats which make them stay open and thus you will foul plugs.

Check for spark on all cylinders. Fire it up at the house on ear muffs and using an inductive timeing light, go from cylinder to cylinder. If one is not sparking, the light will not flash. Cheep mechanic trick. You will either have a bad plug or a bad coil. It's probably a coil.
