How Do You Keep Mice Out Of Boat - 02/25/10 10:25 PM
My boat stays stored at the in-laws in the country. I have a cover on it but have had a problem with mice getting in it and chewing up the cover, towels and whatever else they decide to chew on. Are there any sprays or proven (sensible) ways to keep them out? Ive heard mothballs and peppermint oil but didnt know if they worked. Does anybody else have this problem?
Several methods, but mothballs work. Just put them in an aluminum pie plate and set them in the compartments. When your ready to use the boat, take them out and let the compartments air for a while.... In the mean time, put a couple of rat/mice baits in there and feed them little buggers.

Letting a cat have kittens in it works too.

It is called Red Fox Urine, sold at hunting places. Mine is 4 oz bottles under Pete Richard name. Sold to deer hunters as a way to disgise human smell, just a little goes a long way. Put in the obscure places in boat that will not get washed clean, and you are good to go. Retreat as often as you worry.

Red Fox Urine. Mice hate them. Sold in hunting stores.

I tried red fox urine on squirrels and it didn't work. That stuff stinks too.
I recommend getting moth balls, put them in a sandwich bag or ziplock, punch holes in the bag and put them in the compartments. Then when you go out, pull the bags out and air out the compartments.

They carry a moth-ball block at walmart. they come in a three pack and you can hang them under your front deck on the wiring harness for your trolling motor. the sticky traps work if you can find some place to put it without getting the sticky stuff on your carpet.

I use moth balls, but they do smell aweful.

Sticky traps are hard to find since they are now considered inhumane. Someone told me they don't sell them at all anymore. They are rodents, not humans. Those sticky traps are great but I have seen mice "dance" across them. And they suck when they get on anything like your carpet.

Have you ever seen moth balls?
No, they are too small and the moths move too fast to get a good look.

I use bounce dryer sheets. I have heard this many times before....and it works!! I keep my boat in my parents old pull-barn...and have never seen any traces of mice on my boat. And besides....your boat always smeels nice!! LOL. Just place them around your boat and in your rod lockers.
