Yamaha Ring Free Question

Yamaha Ring Free Question - 09/27/20 09:39 PM

I have a 2002 Mercury Pro XB 250 on a 2002 Bullet 21XD. There is a water separator filter on the side of the engine and it has a sensor on the bottom with a wire attached. About 6 weeks ago, after having the engine serviced, my mechanic told me to use the ring free additive to help keep the engine clean and running better. About 3 weeks after that, while running across the lake, my engine died like it ran out of gas. I could smell gas from around the engine. I pulled the cowling off and the sensor on the bottom of the water separator filter was gone and gas was just pouring out of the hole. I put a new filter on it with a new sensor on. Yesterday while running across the lake I started to gradually lose speed. Speed dropped by 20mph. I shut it down and could smell gas again. Pulled the cowling and there was gas coming out from the bottom of the filter again. Until I started to use ring free I never had an issue with the filter or sensor. Has anyone had any issues or heard of anything happening after using ring free? I did just drain the tank on my boat and will fill up with fresh gas and no ring free when I get the new filter installed. Also, what additive would be the best for an older model merc?

Never an issue like this for me been using it for almost 20 years on my 01 150 HPDI without an issue. I'd say there is something else mechanical going on

My first year to own a Yamaha (2016 150hp). I've used Ring Free since I bought it in February. No issues so far, except the $64 price tag! grin

All of the additives are basically the same so you have a problem that is not related to any additive. cheers

I used Ring Free (and Yamalube) religiously for 18 years in a 2002 Yamaha 150Vmax and never experienced those kinds of problems.

I have been using Ring Free since 1989. I have never had an issue with it. Boat engines run great. What does the engines owners manual say to add to the fuel? I think you might have a different issue. Come to think of it my brother has the same engine and uses Ring Free and has no issues.
