Bass boat for center console?

Bass boat for center console? - 09/02/18 12:59 PM

I have a Ranger Reata 212LS. We fish all species in central Texas including bass, crappie and striper/sand bass. Some outings with the grandkids and less mobile brothers. I’ve only had this boat for a year and a half but I’m seeing a bunch of center console boats out on the lakes nowadays. I’ve heard they’re easier to get around in but wondering if you can still bass fish out of these? I have looked at a few and would like to stay with Ranger bay series. We have a dock and lift at our lake house so it’ll not be trailered much. Also, not much room above with the roof so a large fixed top isn’t happening.

I love my center console and bass fish out of it regularly. Look at the Skeeter center consoles they seem to pretty much be a bass boat hull with center console setup.

Fished all the way to the back of alligator cove at Fork in my 22' Champ last April. I was surprised at how well it did. The only issue you might have is in a high wind. A Bay boat or CC is definitely going to catch a little more wind. We were targeting crappie but the LMBs were more aggressive

The draft on most CC's aren't much more then most bass boat. You shouldn't have any issue bass fishing out of one.

If we're talking about Bay Boat styled center consoles then most draft less then bass boats. The average 20-21' class bass boat drafts 15-18". Most 20-23' bay boats only draft 12-14' and can get on plane in less the 2' of water.

I fish multi species out of mine all the time. No carpet...so blood, fish [censored], stink bait no worries. Standing hitting waves is easier on the back then sitting. Designed for saltwater, so you can fish both fresh and salt. The console does catch wind and will be moved around more then a low profile bass boat. But it's really not that big of a deal, especially with a terrova.

I have cuaght tons of fish from a 14ft jon w/ tiller, a ton out of a 21ft bass bpat and a ton out of a 18ft center console. It's just whatever you like and is most comfortable to you. My choice is a CC, for the above reasons.

I’ll add to my previous post since I’ve been running a bay boat for almost 2 years now and I’m strictly a bass fisherman. Don’t think I’ll ever go back to a bass boat.
Pros: more room to move around, more room if more then 2 people are on bird or fishing, smoother in nasty water and weather conditions, easier to clean with no carpet, can run in shallower water.
Cons: slower, catches more wind (easily overcome with X5i), higher gunnels when swinging a fish in.

I have finally got past the slower part for the most part. I liked tinkering with my Ranger to try to get another couple of RPMs/MPH out of it. I tried to find a Bay Boat with a 250 on it but the only one I found sold before I could get to it. If my Optimax bites the dust rather that rebuild I will probably hang a 250 on it.

Traded my Skeeter 21i for a Skeeter ZX 22 bay boat four years ago and would not consider going back to a bass boat and fish for bass 90% of the time

I ran into a caveat that could cause me to back out. My 212LS has a beam of 94” and most Bay Boats are 100”+. That would be an issue for my boat lift and cover on my dock. Thanks all for your input and I’ll keep researching

I know you mentioned staying with Ranger, but Nautic Star make a 21' CC in a 98" beam, and one in a 92" beam.

I saw that... And we have a dealer in Granbury where my lakehouse is. I'll look into it over the next few months

Went from a Stratos bass boat to a Majek 22 Extreme. Best decision ever made..

I grew up bass fishing.. BUT, I live about 15 mins from the salt. So I said, get a boat that can do both.

Very versatile!!! I can head down to Galveston one day and catch trout and reds, and the next day head up to Rayburn for a tournament.. With the 225, I pushing 64mph WOT. Have it fully loaded with a power pole, Garmin, trolling motor, etc.. Never going back to a bass boat, although I do somewhat miss it.. This boat will do anything and floats very shallow. Very smooth ride, takes chop well, and very stable. You can actually move around in it.. While the guys in their $80,000 Skeeters can't make it across Toledo bend in a chop, I'll be on the other side in no time..

Don't have a pic of my particular boat, but here's what they look like https://www.2coolfishing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=298381
