Evinrude Intruder mechanic suggestions?

Evinrude Intruder mechanic suggestions? - 12/20/17 02:57 PM

I've got a 93 175 Intruder on a 94 Ranger 482vs. Motor seems to run great and has very good holeshot. Prop is a 23 Renegade and boat is running 59 mph gps, at 5300 rpm. I started with a 27 Shooter at 4700 rpm. I thought that dropping it 4 would increase the rpm's a little more than 600 rpm, so I'm concerned that there may be a fuel or spark issue.

The plugs look great and idle is good, with a little bit of spitting. Just had the regulator/rectifier replaced as well as the roller that controls the throttle and timing advance. I guess I just expected a little more top end higher rpm's. Dealer suggested just going lower on the prop pitch, but I want to be 100% sure the motor is right.

One person suggested replacing the optical sensor as he had a drop in rpm and replacing it fixed the problem. It's not an expensive part, so I might do that, but I'm thinking its a fuel issue as the plugs very light brown/gray. I replaced the steel reeds with Chris Carson reeds and that was a big improvement with idle and holeshot.

Any suggestions on a good mechanic in the DFW or within a couple of hours drive? Not wanting to just throw money at it, but want to make sure it's running properly.

Gary, I already changed the reeds and it was a big improvement. I’m just tired of buying props, to try to get the rpm’s up, and want to make sure everything else is good. I’m taking it out tomorrow to see if engaging the choke, while running WOT, helps. It has been suggested that I may have an air leak as it appears to be a little lean to me.

Ill get in touch with you after I try that.

VRO might not be giving enough fuel pressure

I was thinking that as well as a possible air leak at higher rpm. I read a post about a person with the same motor and similar symptoms. He had a float bowl leaking air. Changed out bowls and fixed the problem.

I took my boat out and tried hitting the choke while on plane. After a few seconds, the motor just started to bog down. Let off and it picked right back up. RPM's never got above 5200. Closer to 5100.Trimming the motor up until the boat got a little squirrely didn't make it rev higher.

I'm still really interested in some suggestions for an Evinrude outboard mechanic around DFW.

Nobody has any suggestions? Surely there's someone on here that has experience getting an older Intruder worked on.

Gary, I appreciate the offer, but I'm actually looking for peoples referral/opinions/experiences, more than a businesses offering to work on my engine.

So far I haven't had any luck getting that.

Seems you always hear good things about Rockwall Marine, might give them a shot at it.
