Fishin Setups - 05/21/11 02:40 AM

How do you guys decide which rods to pair with which reel? And better yet which baits to fish on said rod? I was told that a 6'6 med or med hvy rod is a good all-around rod. So that's all I've ever purchased. But I'm at the point now where I wanna learn to fish the "right way". I usually throw small cranks, weightless/weighted worms, and jerkbaits. Any advice would be helpful. Here what I have.
6'6 med hvy fast Carbonlite with a 6.4.1 pro qualifer
6'6 med Berkley Lighting rod shock with an 6.3.1 H2O mettle
6'6 med hvy fast bps extreme combo 6.4.1
Are these paired up right? I know they all seem the same setup but I can tie the same lure on all 3 and get 3 different casting results?? All reels spooled with 30lb power pro.

Well what is "right"? There are some benefits from technique specific rods, but if you are comfortable with what you have then in my opinion, you are already fishing the "right" way.

Thanks 210... I'm happy with what I have for now. I'm just wondering if my setups are paired properly? And trying to decide if I need to use one over another for a certain bait is all. I mean I kinda use em all for every lure in the tackle box. Would one of my rods be better for shallow cranks over another? Is one better for worms? That's really all. BTW, hella of catch you got there.

I use a 7'2" med hvy for just about all my jig pitching and soft plastics unless I'm fishing really heavy structure and I have to turn the fish around in a hurry which I'll use a 7'6" hvy or x hvy. I throw a med for most of my cranks and prefer at least a 7 foot rod just for casting distance. 6'6" med to med hvy are great for short accurate casts for situations like spinner baits or small cranks. This is what I'm comfortable with though. Thanks for the compliment by the way. My best suggestion is next time you go to Academy fondle with the rods a little and see which one you feel comfortable with and stick with that. As far as reels go I prefer high speed reels for pitching and top water baits and small jerk baits/small cranks. If im throwing a spinner I like a 6:4.1. Deeper diving I prefer anywhere from a 5:0.1 to a 6:3.1. But most reels in the mid 6's are great all purpose. Like I said before its all about what you are comfortable and confident with.
