Looking for recommendations for 7’ to 8’ heavy spinning rod

Looking for recommendations for 7’ to 8’ heavy spinning rod - 06/20/20 06:09 AM

I currently own a 7’6” heavy fast 1 piece spinning rod paired with a Shimano Sahara 4000 series spinning reel. I will be selling the rod soon, because a 1 piece 7’6” rod is not convenient for me. I will be needing to replace it with a 7’0” to 8’0” heavy or medium heavy spinning rod that is a 2, 3, or 4 piece travel rod.

Primarily, this rod will need to be a do-it-all rod for larger game fish, such as great lakes salmon, musky and pike, stripers and hybrids, large catfish, and inshore saltwater species.

Being at least 2 pieces is a must, because the places I would use this rod are lakes and bodies of water that I would need to travel long distances to, and I don’t have the space to transport a 1 piece rod that is 7’6” long. My budget is about $100, but the less expensive, the better. I can’t justify spending much more than that with how seldom this rod will be used. I would prefer if the rod is equipped with a quality Fuji reel seat and cork handles, but that is not a must as I realize my pickings are probably slim for a rod like that at this price point.

I would just like to mention that a St. Croix Tidemaster travel would be perfect, if it wasn’t so expensive. $260 is a very hard price to swallow on a rod that gets used maybe 2-3 times a year tops.

I did find an Offshore Angler 2 piece imshore rod at bass pro shops that runs $110 at regular price and looks decent, but I was wondering if there are any good, but cheaper alternatives out there or if there are better ones out there for about the same price.

I think I’ve narrowed it down to two options, either a 7’0” medium heavy with a fast action 2 piece or a 7’6” heavy with a fast or mod-fast action 2-piece. Been searching high and low trying to find something but haven’t found anything better or cheaper yet in my searches than the offshore angler rod. As I mentioned this is just going to be a general purpose big game fish rod that I can travel with. Cork handles are a must, I don’t like the foam ones. Other than that, I’m not too fussy. Any suggestions?

Falcon Rod Company has some traveler rods. Not sure if they have a spinning rod in medium heavy, but they are designed for saltwater fishing so they have some backbone to them. I have several of their one piece rods and they have handled most everything including bull reds without issue.

Man, it is real not easy to understand what do you really want? smile
May be, you will try one of telescopic rods?
They are often real cheap but working well, and for the price around $30 on ebay, it may be right thing for you to try?
I know at least one guy who is fishing well exclusively those rods.
Not perfect to any particular application, but might be used everywhere smile

I’ve used their entry level HD series rods in the past, great product. I’ll look into them.

I’m not really looking for a telescoping rod.

It’s pretty simple what I want; a 7’0” to 7”6” medium heavy spinning rod with cork handles. Must be 2 pieces (even better if it’s a 4 piece rod with a storage pouch or tube). It will be paired with a Shimano 4000 size spinning reel.

This rod is going to be an all around, General purpose big game fish rod that gets used maybe 2 or 3 times a year if I’m lucky. I might take it inshore saltwater fishing on the gulf, I might go salmon fishing on the Great Lakes, I might go musky and pike fishing in the upper midwest or Canada.

I just need a solid 2 piece medium heavy rod that will handle that for under $100 if possible. Closest thing I’ve found is this: https://www.basspro.com/shop/en/offshore-angler-inshore-extreme-spinning-rod-2334329-1

If I can find something similar for less money, great! If not, I think that is what I’m going to go with.
