braid on conventional reel for topwater?

Can I put braid on my chronarch 7:2 with a flouro leader for throwing yellow magics? Rod 7' medium light action. I have caught many big fish on this setup with straight flouro.

One question. When you spool up Braid, do you spool up "entirely with braid"...then add some fluro leader line? If so, why spool up entirely with braid....you'll never use it all. My point here is this. If you spool up a portion of your reel with mono first, then splice some braid to it,then leader line, wouldn't it be a lot cheaper dollar wise? Of course you will have to figure out how much of each you will use or need in your casting distance. Just curious...

then there will be two knots going out if I cast most of it. In order to get max distance I like to have the level on the spool at about the height of the level wind. Perhaps a little mono would be OK. Good idea, thanks.

I used spool mainly mono with enough braid to exceed my furthest cast be a few dozen yards then a short mono or flouro leader than tie to topwater with loop knot. Work fine for freshwater fishing. Once I started fishing the coast, the mono to braid knot would leave the reel to often for comfort when fighting a redfish.

For my bay and bass rods i fill full spool with braid and use a 6 ft mono leader for lure changes with a crazy alberto knot and usually a canoe man loop knot to my lure or hook. When my leader gets to be about 12" to 15" long i retie another long leader. When the top half spool of braid gets too frayed or fuzzy i pull it all off and put the top on the bottom. The braid that was on the bottom has never been used and is brand new. Usually 30# braid with 20# big game leader or similar.

On my big game gear i do a half spool of braid for long line capacity to fight a fish. The braid almost never sees the light of day unless we get on a kraken where we will need that line capacity. The braid will likely never be changed. Then top half of spool with mono.

My medium heavy gear usually has half 30# braid with half 25# mono on top tied with a crazy alberto.
My heavier gear has half 50# braid with half 40# mono on top tied with crazy alberto.

thank you for your input. So today I stripped off most of the 15 # Invz floro and then refilled with 30 # braid and then a 6' 12 # Invz leader and then the topwater.
I'll have to wait until Thursday when I get back on the water to see how I make out.

I haven't actually fished in the salty stuff since about 1992 and then it was all mono. But had few breakoffs back in the day. Was spooled a few times however. Mainly big sharks.

Flourocarbon isnt ideal for throwing topwaters as it tends to want to sink. Honestly i find tieing on a leader for topwater presentations is a waste of time. Go straight braid, back off your drags a little and you should be fine.

I agree. Flouro sinks and pulls the head of the bait down in my opinion, especially poppers like a YM.

Not sure of the reason for a leader on topwater but not saying it's wrong. Just go straight braid or straight mono. I prefer the braid myself but would not use less than 40lb. If you go smaller than that the line will dig into itself in the spool on a baitcast reel and if you have never experienced a 10 yard cast with a snap back I don't recommend it. All braids are not equal either. If you go that route make sure to look into a quality braid. I like the Sufix 832 personally.
